Are You Having Problems with your Magic Jack Voip Phone?

My Magic Jack voip phone worked perfectly for the first 6 weeks or so. Always loaded when I either turned my computer on or restarted my computer. Then, it started not always loading, and sometimes giving me an error in Red Letters: “Warning: You must plug magicJack into USB”. Well duh, it was plugged in, and after waiting for a few minutes, it would then load and be fine…for a while anyway. The softphone screen started disappearing, sometimes coming back on its own, sometimes not. Then my computer desktop kept freezing up and after rebooting many times while trying other fixes, it finally dawned on me to unplug the Magic Jack USB device from my computer. Voila! No more freezing up! After doing some research on the net, it seems like I may have better success with my Magic Jack if I use it with an A/C powered USB port. So, that is my next step in getting my Magic Jack back to working order. If not, then I’ll bite the bullet and get in touch with their customer service at their web site and go from there. I always hate calling customer service, I’d rather see if I can fix the problem myself, just in case it’s something dumb that I overlooked doing. Also not looking forward to calling their customer service because I’ve heard it totally sucks. I’m going to buy the A/C powered USB port tomorrow, I’ll report back whether that fixes my problem.

Have you had problems with your Magic Jack voip? If so, how did you get it fixed…if you did?

Just wanted to say HI. I found your blog a few days ago on Technorati and have been reading it over the past few days.

Thanks Dan, glad you said Hi and nice to know you found me on Technorati!

My problem with majic jack is that you cannot connect to an office ext. after you dial the main number, so how can you do without another phone?

4. admin Says:

I don’t think the Magic Jack service is yet at the point where a person could ditch their regular phone service. Magic Jack is great for saving on long distance calls, but that is the best point of it at this time, as long as it works!

5. Ricardo Says:

Iam disappointed in majic jack.Very much frustrated that I dont know what to do.First my phone doesn’t ring and can only see it on my computer.Secondly,I cant use my handset to enter my numbers unless the soft phone and the keyboard.Ihave tried all the options prescribed in your knowledge base data but nothing is working.

8. admin Says:

@Richard,

Have you tried a different phone with Magic Jack to see if another phone will work better? Also check to make sure that “Do Not Disturb” has not been checked…you’ll find that by clicking the Menu button on the Softphone screen.

Hope this helps!

—cannot change address for 911,
—cannot change home number
—when connected magic jack blocks home phone
number – (cannot make or receive calls)
—I am still getting charged for making long
distance calls from the phone company,
unlike what your commercials say
*** I either need to get these things fixed ASAP or totally discontinue the service. When trying reach a live person for help I keep getting caught up in some crazy internet loop & there is no contact phone number to actually talk to a real live breathing person.
It would be terrific if this really did work.

10. admin Says:

The only thing I can say is to keep trying the live chat as there isn’t any other way to contact the company, as far as their web site shows.

Best of luck!

can anybody give a link/forum with magicjack error message – warning: you must plug magicjack into USB.

I had performed the magicfix compatibility test but still not working. I also tried all the options prescribed in your knowledge base data but nothing is working. helllllllllllllllllllp

I’m having the same problem with my magic jack, so ordered an AC powered USB hub…when it arrives, I’ll let you know if that solved my problem!

14. Karen Says:

BE FOREWARNED!!!

I would just like to share my personal experience that I had with MagicJack and their ‘customer support’. While we watch the cute video of Dan and his child on MagicJack’s homepage and hoping that this will help cut our phone bill costs, they sit back and collect the dollars without supporting their product.

MagicJack will not support or replace the USB extender cable that they send WITH the MagicJack. After being ru-around on their not-so tech support ‘chat’ and being ‘transferred’ to someone (‘Therese’) who claimed to be a floor manager, I was told that they will not replace this part even though it was shipped to me that way. This creates a problem for those of us that cannot have the other USB plug blocked or headphone jecks. It also creates difficulty if your computer tower only has USB ports in the back of the tower. The USB extender cable becomes a necessity in these cases.
I was never offered an exchange and was refused one when I directly asked and told that they don’t support it.

trying to get live chat. all I get is this website. I bought a new phone because I couldn’t hear from the old one now I do not have a dial tone. I have tried everything. could you help?

16. admin Says:

Try the live chat at this web address at the official Magic Jack website:

17. garry Says:

My magic jack worked one day with my phone. Then could only use the headset and soft pad. So I used a 2nd mj a friend had and it worked great. So after spending over 5hrs with the MJ TECHS?? and many downloads using different 3 comps and 3 different phones the said they would replace it at no charge, Now i check my email and they show a charge of 39.95 for the replacement, They had better give me credit when I return the defective MJ. i will keep everyone informed of if they stand by their word. Oh by the way I asked the techs for a phone # to talk to a tech, and they said they didnt have phone service.. They must be using MJ>>

18. admin Says:

@Garry,

It is just mind-blowing that magic jack does not have a phone number, even for customer service when selling their product. That has to change or I’m afraid they’ll end up biting the dust!

19. debbie Says:

Sad to say, my mj worked well 1-2nd week. I got rid of my landline, changed my dsl service to dryloop. instead of 14.99 mnthly via Verizon I now pay 25.00 a month. But no monthly bill so ok, right? Wrong. The phone goes directly to voicemail now no matter what. Tried the upgrade & all the suggestions they gave me at magicfix. I got cust svc on a Sunday, they were polite & tried to help. Even got the phone to ring one time but it hasnt since. Verizon made me commit to dryloop service for a year so I am stuck.

the worse thing is I listened to all the hype. Just call me a magic SAP. Oh wait, you can’t (call me that is…cause it NEVER rings!) Thanks Magic Jack and for all a hard lesson, you get what you pay for.

20. Janet Cadigan Says:

Magic Jack is perfect for my situation. We do not make or receive a lot of calls or stay on those calls for long periods. The only reason I have kept my landline phone is for those situations where you are trying to get some business matter cleared up and you are put on hold etc. for long periods of time. Don’t want to use my cell phone minutes that way.
Only problem I have to keep resetting it. It will work for a day or so and then I have to reset it again. The problem is that when I attempt to call out, the call goes through, but I cannot hear it ringing and cannot hear the person answer at the other end although they can hear me.

21. admin Says:

@Janet,

I was having the same problem with my Magic Jack, and it just kept getting worse. I purchased an AC powered USB hub and that solved the problem for me…it’s been working perfectly ever since.

Hope this helps

22. ed martz Says:

I am a NY attorney and purchasd the MagicJack. I’m severely disappointed! Doesn’t work, can’t get to any cusmtoner service reps, and when I try to get to a “live person”, the site re-routes me to an endless circle of non-communicative crap. I am going to sue them. Anybody else interested? We call it “Class Actions” and, even if the only result is to get theme to provide what they promised, I’ll do it. But right now I’m in my 15 day return period and there is no way for me to cancel, despite their representations that cancelling would be a snap. I hate these kinds of lies.

23. admin Says:

Magic Jack does not have any customer service telephone numbers. All customer service (?) is handled through the chat at the web site or email.

You can go to their FAQ page here:

http://www.magicjack.com/4/faq/

Then Click on “how do I return my magicjack” for instructions on how to return your Magic Jack, including how to request a RMA form.

Hope this helps!

24. SHANNON Says:

I GOT MY MAJICJACK WORK FANTASTIC,Iwould like to know with the AC power USB hub can multiple Majic jacks be used on a hub.

25. Joe Says:

Hello – I had a horrible experience with MagicJack. My voicemail stopped working completely, so I got online and chatted with their tech support. In the process, however, the product completely died on me. I have submitted for a refund, but it gets worse because the MagicJack number I created is printed on business cards and the number is where clients called to reach me. It has ruined my business. I hope people are reading this and re-thinking their decision. I think if you do enough research online you will come to the conclusion that it’s not worth the risk. I would also suggest that you check the Better Business Bureau’s site. There’s plenty there to convince you that it’s not worth it. I wish I had done more research.

26. SBROOKS Says:

I am so sorry the problems that I hear of this majic jack. I was just about to order it and gave them the wrong credit card information. So I received an e-mail that my credit card was declined. So I began doing some research and this is how I got to you all. Thank all of you for your help in allowing me not to go through these problems.

27. Sam Says:

Their customer service is anything but customer service. I spent a long time trying to figure out how to talk to a human, and when I finally got to chat (with Tanya), she was totaly inpet and she provide no help at all. All I wanted was to know how to order the product via express delivery and pay the associated higher shipping costs, but she never could direct me. Finally i got frustrated and swore them off. I will shop for a more expensive service that works

28. Mel Buebel Says:

I heve found that the only # is 877-901-5225 and it is full most of the time. My phone worked the first setup and only the first week. Now I gat a dial tone but when I dial another number the phone goes dead. A class action suit sounds great. Just email everyone to get started. I noticed in the other comments there was no central email address to send our complaint to.

29. jinni Says:

magic jack work really good for me exept …. when I try to call someone on their cell phone in canada it doesen”t work !!!! I try and try and try and still dosen’t work

30. Dave Says:

I have been thinking about buying MJ but It seems there are still some bugs to work out {with all of internet PHONE COMPANIES that Screw with the public} so that a system like this will work perfectly everywhere for anyone with DSL access.

31. admin Says:

There are some bugs to be worked out with Magic Jack but if you’re interested in saving money on long distance calls, it works really well for that. And you can’t beat the price!

32. mubeen Says:

my phone is not ringing. magic jack is connected well i can dial and receive calls..but my phone is not ringing…when an incoming call comes it is just alerting me on my computer screen..

what is the problem..help me out people

33. admin Says:

Mubeen,

I don’t mean to state the obvious but you didn’t say whether you had tried more than one phone with your Magic Jack. If you have and they still don’t ring (but ring on a regular landline incoming call) I would contact magicJack’s customer service and also check out their FAQ pages at http://magicjack.com

34. Dick Chevy Says:

Mine worked well then quit suddenly. After messaging with support for 2 hours, they agree’d to send a replacement. When I used the new jumper cable, the original unit worked fine, so check that jumper if you seem to have connection problems. Have never had trouble with ringing a any phone and have tested half a dozen including several wireless headsets. Sometimes calls won’t go thru for awhile and when they do, the other party’s audio cuts in and out. One day I made a call and ended up chatting with some other party with an MJ. I suspect the things were so popular, they are having capacity problems. I agree with the party who said the investment/risk is too low to worry about, but I wouldn’t rely to heavily on it or try to run a business with it. YGWYPF Skype has far superior audio and is very reliable but costs a bunch to have a call in number which is included in MJ’s $20/yr fee.

35. admin Says:

I agree with you Dick, magicjack is growing so fast that they are bound to have problems as things get worked out. Still, for only 20 bucks a year (plus the initial cost of the device), it is a great way to save money on long distance calls.

36. eloy Says:

How to get your magic jack to work again. You need to go to my computer and right click vista mj and then click start on the window that will pop up. then click OK. This will wipe out your contact list, but you will be able to use your magic jack. I don’t put in a name contact list for if the message pops up again it will just wipe it out when i have to it all over again it up the next time. Good luck

37. admin Says:

Thanks for that tip eloy!

38. ladylivy Says:

hi…..i set up my mj and it does not make calls…when i dial a number it redials it and goes straight to ring tone

39. admin Says:

Try unplugging the mj device and plugging it in again. If that doesn’t work then try the magic fix at the official website magicjack.com. Then if you are still having problems chat with magicjack’s customer service and see if they can fix it for you.

40. ed Says:

MJ worked great for 4 months. Now it says an upgrade is happening within the next 60 days. And gives an error code 3. Tried on live chat. Spent 45 minutes with customer care. Says I now after all this time have to open a bunch of ports. Not sure if this is advisable. The upgrade will not download at all.

41. Dave Olson Says:

The MJ has worked great on my desktop. My son-in-law used it for a week for his work while here visiting and liked it so much he has ordered one.
I decided to use it with my laptop(CompaQ) and the blue light goes on for two seconds and then off. The computer sends a flag saying it detects a new harware trying to use a USB port and does not recognize it. Any thoughts?

42. admin Says:

Dave,

I use my magic jack on a laptop also. Usually any problems like this have been solved by rebooting my computer. Also, it may work better for you with an external ac power usb hub. I had problems with mine working until I bought one of those usb hubs.

Hope this helps.

43. admin Says:

ed,

I have gotten any messages about an upgrade yet, so I hope my magic jack keeps working!

44. David Says:

I know several people that have gotten them and been happy. When I first plugged it in, it stopped trying to connect to the Internet to update faster than i could OK the firewall. So I had to manually download the update from Magicfix. I noticed it installed a small driver and service so as a matter of procedure, I rebooted.

At first, I found the sound broke up a lot. I found that the USB extension cord I had was not good enough but if I used the supplied one, it was much better.

If you leave your computer on all the time, you may find it useful to restart once in awhile. Windows has a way of building up memory issues, etc that can clear with a reboot. Just unplugging and replugging MJ can help too.

Sometimes, new programs or security updates can break other things if they don’t ‘play nice’. That MJ loads from itself helps but if it was working and now doesn’t, what’s changed? Careful with those firewall messages – you may just approve blocking it.

People also should keep in mind that it is a demanding device. You’re feeding 2 ways audio and data. If your computer is heavily loaded with auto-loading programs, has a lot of background things going on, or has issues, such a device can highlight them. It won’t work for everyone. And that’s no fault of the MJ folks. PCs are almost as unique as people.

45. admin Says:

David,

Thank you for the great insight and tips! The MJ company does tell you to unplug and replug the device once a month, but that direction isn’t anywhere in large bold blinking letters. But as with anything with your PC, rebooting does solve a lot of problems at times.

Thanks again, great post!

46. Kathy Says:

Please tell me what is wrong when I call out on my regular phone. Everyone that I call can not hear one word that I am trying to say. They say it is like someone is trying to slap me in the mouth. Please help. Thanks, Kathy

47. Kathy Says:

I already did.

48. admin Says:

Kathy,

Have you tried using a different phone to see if it makes a difference?

49. James Says:

Kathy,
Try hard booting or unpulging it wait one min. and replug.

50. JoeAnn Says:

All,

I bought two MJ for communications with my spouse. This thing worked fine up until a month ago. I utilzed the customer service for a total of 10hrs and I still get the “Warning you must plug…” message. I bought a AC powered USB hub today and this thing is still inop. I’ve done everything from installing, updating, rebooting to now a AC powered USB Hub.

I use Windows Vista….any suggestions?
My spouse has the same computer and Vista system and hasn’t had any issues…

I found this site tonight and the computer savy people are having trouble too…

51. Lonnie Says:

Similar postings by Mubeen and FAQ about incoming calls not ringing the phone. Tried different phone, tried reboot, checked softphone config, spoke with 5 different customer svc agents for 2.5 hrs and still no ring. MJ ain’t ringing my bell! Engineer will look into it and get back to me via email. At this point, better to RMA and get money back. Too bad, I’ve been doing free ads for friends and family…and being the first to try out and thinking it works!! If the MJ phone rings, I’d have been happy customer. If people find solutions, please post in FAQ of MJ site.

52. Sue Says:

I was in the process of ordering this (without research) and at the last page where it says verify before submitting, I saw where my card would be charged today. So I backed out. Guess what? My card has a $46.90 hold on it. So after an hour on their “live chat”, they are telling me that the billing dept will contact me in 2-3 days.

Warning! Any company that does not have a phone number for contact is running a scam.

53. George- Garland, Texas Says:

My experience with Magic Jack: I can’t call long distance from my home phone, so I bought a Magic Jack for outgoing long distance calls only (to save minutes on my cell phone). I unplug my Magic Jack when it is not in use, but I do have to wait for it to load up when I want to place a call. I have had occasional problems with calls being disconnected or the called party not being able to hear me (but I can still hear them). I just redial the number and it usually works. This could be because my DSL service is minimal. My computer is old, too. It doesn’t even have a high-speed USB port. All in all, I am satisfied.
I use Magic Jack’s call forwarding to forward my Magic Jack number to my land-line phone, because incoming calls are free. Since I don’t use the Magic Jack to receive calls, I cannot vouch for that ability. But I wonder how the Magic Jack generates ring current (48 volts at 22 hertz) from a USB port, because if it does, it most certainly must come from the Magic Jack itself!
There is a certain irony about making phone calls over a DSL provided by the phone company without going through the phone company!

54. DEA Says:

I’ve been using the MagicJack for a few weeks, now. It’s a good concept and we all are trying to taked advantage of a “good” deal. It’s apparent the MJ does what the developer says it does. Literally thousands sell each day. It is not too new, but because of uncertainties (and some big companies’ potential loses), many wouldn’t put it out there. We are a part of history in the making. If you like to sit back and wait for everyone else to do things, then stop jumping on new technology. Otherwise, let’s be the ones to find solutions. Now that that is said. Your phone or your computer is most likely the problem. Do you know if your phone is european made, american made, chinese, or what? So is it 6o VAC, 50 VAC, 40 VAC, 70 VAC? Well you need to know how much voltage it takes to ring your particular phone. Aha ! Hadn’t thought of that. how much power does your usb put out ? how much does MJ put out or require? Just a thought. Many differnt installations of software will cause different reactions. Problem. My sound just stopped working one day. I checked my sound and audio properties and found a surprise. It seems some king of magic jack audio device had become my default audio device. I simply opened the dropdown box and re-selected my Realtek HD Audio drivers. Simple. I have no idea what prompted the change, since I’d been using MJ for 3 weeks, at the time. But it did. Computers do that. I had 3 phoes strung up to my MJ. You coyuld use any of them to talk. However, none would ring. I disconnected them and connected 1 directly. Worked but didn’t ring. Tried a different one 40 VAC rating. Rings of the hook. Since it uses Bandwith, problems will come. So be sure to run directly to the proper phone and not to the wall, or any other creative configuration. High traffic hours mean, fluctuations. I had the same problem with Vonage, which costed 4 times as much for the device and exactly 36 times as much per year. No 2 computers are exactly alike, even if they are from the same assembly line. Parts fail and software gets configured differently, causing different reactions. To JoeAnn, I Strongly suspect Vista. Try swapping both MJ devices on the computers and see what happens. Either both will work on only 1 computer, or only will work on both computers. So if they both work on your spouses computer, then some configuration or software that isn’t running on your spouses computer, is running on yours and may be the problem. Vista is about as stable as Iran. Also I do suggest disabling the firewall and/or antivirus and even antispyware and antiadware, just to see if it changes your results. All computers are configured differently, so TCIP settings can be the problem, as well as router brands, router settings, port forwarding, and yes even your ISP. They may not tell you, but they could be imposing bandwith or other restricions that are causing the problems. If you are behind a router, you’ll probably have some configuring to do. Consider this. Once registered and assigned a number, these devices are toally mobile. So, try using it on several computers, of different types in different places ( a friend’s house, work, etc.)or with different types of services. To the lawyer, there’s no need to waste time. True It MIGHT be better to have humans answering phones, but consider this. I’ m considered to be very good with fixing computers. If the developers were to pay a team of people of my qualifications and higher, we probably wouldn’t be in this forum. 1. The device and service would have to cost much more, in order to support the support. 2. If it costed much more, it wouldn’t be unique (VOIP isn’t new), so you CAN pay for Vonage support if you want, and a few others. New technology has glitches, just like old ones. So, we in the IT world, try to be patient, understanding, and resourceful, in helping these developers, and the consumers, to get it right. Magic Jack has done what it promised to do and only costs 40 bucks to find out if it’s for you. Vista costs 200 bucks for you to find out that you should’ve never have left XP. Microsoft is the best candidate, in the ENTIRE world, for a class action suite. It’s the greatest deception, next to the non-existance of satan. But bottom line. Seriously, anyone from MagicJack, to GM, to Boeing could sell defected products and, yes, there must be a viable way of addressing those issues. And if you look real closely, you;ll find an email address for the actual man himself, which he does respond to. But, most likely, magic jack, itself, is not the problem. Some vehicles run on unleaded, some run on deisel, some run on electrical current, some run on H2O, some run on vegetable oil. But they aren’t interchangeable, you have to feul them according to their individual requirements. MJ doesn’t know individual configurations, but it does work on computers with Broadband internet capability.

@DEA…Wow…impressive post! Thanks for your knowledge and input!

56. Oneman Funplan Says:

I guess this proves that you’re gonna get what you pay for. WHAT A JOKE OF A COMPANY!!!!!!!!!

The idea behind the product is great, but the details need to be worked out BEFORE mass marketing. UNBELIEVABLE!!!!!!

buy from QVC and it is cheaper–try it–if not–return it–and they(QVC)will not give you any problems

59. Ken Robbins Says:

I purchased mj because my girl has it and so far it has worked for her. I, on the otherhand, have not been able to install the mj even after many trys. Then I found this place to read comments and replies. Most of the replies are subject to buy this or that and it only a mater of time before mj fixes it’s problems. I live in a remote aprt of the Idaho outback, but I do have a good internet system, (“Wild Blue”), and it serves me well, however I am not in a postion to be throughing good money after bad. I’m retired and have a limited income, and there’s no room for cheap pieces of equipment to bogg me down and waste my money. I had verizon without service, I have T Mob because their ads showed service in my area. NOT SO! Now I concidering using only email as my only com service. It is sad that we as consumers fall or these types of gimics in an effort to save a buck, but we do. I’m going to attemp to get some kid of refund for my efforts, but I’m not expecting much. My girl friend said if it doesn’t work, I’m not out much. Let me tell you, mj, if it doesn’t work I’m out of my mind for having bought into the, as one respondent said, “scam”. QVC allready cost me $900.00+ for a piece of junk jewllery my late wife bought late onr night. Well, so much for the wimping and wining. It goes back today. enough said. I’l try to say from late night info ads. Sad unhappy snuck. BFN.

60. Sheldon Says:

I will have to agree with DEA. Every computer was assembled differently and with different componenets. Each one has different configurations. Check your sound card devices first and then your video card configs. I have 5 computers in my house 3 of which are XP and one of which is Vista. You must make sure all required updates are up to date and properly loaded. If you have not done so, then this is one of many issues to arise. Example from this was my neice, she never updated anything in her computer. She wasn’t able to to get her computer to run correclty and some things would stop working, ie her sound and video cards and her printer. Once her updates were properly installed and updated it worked fine. A computer is like a car they need routine maintenance and proper care or they will stop working.

magicjack needs a lot of work. It ruined the USB port on my computer. The agents will not talk on the phone; then they give you the bum rush when you demand satisfaction.

66. Tim MACKINNON Says:

I ordered MagicJack because Skype keeps promising a SkypeIn (incoming number–Canadain area codes) but never delivers. The MJ worked perfectly on my MAC but I could not find a Canadian area code. However, their adverts on television, say it works anywhere in North America (I suppose all three countries). I assumed that Canada (which invented the telephone) would be first on the list.

The first lie was the “free trial”. The second was the area codes (lie of ommision), and the third is the lack of a phone number for returns–which should be law. I can’t believe they get away with this. I called the CRTC and they said it would take 5 years for them to issue a permit for Canadian area codes and that there is no application yet from MagicJack. What gives? Anyone thinkinf of class action, please take my name. I will fund up to 1,000.00 to get me piece of mind.

what do i do if my magicjack would not connect to my internet?

68. Andrew Martinez Says:

Okay so I bought a Magic Jack because I thought it was a great deal. I plugged it into my parents computer and it installed the soft phone and I would get a dial tone right away no problems. I bring it to my computer and plug it in and it does nothing. My computer recognizes that it is connected and in the device manager it shows up as usb internet phone by tiger jet under other devices. I don’t even know what that is considering I bought a MagicJack. I have spent several countless hours with the live technical service reps. that are each morons in their own rights. They have given me a bull shit run around and have helped me solve nothing. I don’t know what else I can do I’m very frustrated. Also, I ran the upgrade and its say my MagicJack isn’t plugged in when it is. I don’t know what else to do. Sounds like a good deal n’ all but, so far its about as worthless as can be thanks for any suggestions or help would be much appreciated…

69. Chuck W. Says:

Andrew,
Sorry you are having problems. Please right-click on the start button and open explore. CHoose the Majic Jack (or whatever the Majic Jack is named in your list)with a right click. Then left click on Autoplay. I think you have turned off autoplay for your system.
If that works, great. If it doesn’t, do a search for the unofficial magic jack forum. These people have the answer to just about every Majic Jack question!

70. Dan Says:

Ed Martz, I’d love to join your lawsuit, although I am in NV.

My recent experiences with MagicJack have led me to write a letter to their company, the Federal Trade Commission and the NV State Attorney General regarding their terms of service.

My situation is listed here: http://voip2u.org/magic-jack-phone-service#comment-489

To recap, after being told that I had breached their terms of service, section 6 due to “excessive use” (Doesn’t unlimited use mean what I think it does these days?), I now have a castrated useless service and am out of money for the renewal.

BE WARNED, if you use this service frequently (e.g., as your only phone service as I did) then you will receive a “Dear John” msg from them.

71. Dan Says:

ADDENDUM TO MY COMMENTS ABOVE: The company does have a bad track record with refunds in particular – e.g., the deceptive nature of their “free” offer. The Florida section of the BBB gives them an “F” rating with 668 complaints as of today. See below:

I am frustrated with MJ.

I have disconnected long distance from home phone.
I have kept my home phone due to emergency 911 calls.

I do not have a dial tone when i pick up to call
I have to hang up few times to get a dial tone
I sometimes get frustrated and leave the phone

I made long distance calls yesterday from my cell phone.

Times are bad financially who is going to pay for the time and frustration i wonder…I am tempted to say “can i get refund and you can have your Jack back”

Yes, don’t tell me to switch phones i have already done so.

Actually I am making less long distance phone calls since I switched to MJ…wonder why??

73. Lisa Says:

addition to the above comment

I live in Canada. MJ does not offer one month trial service in Canada…wish they did

I would not be wasting my time writing here, i would be thanking them for letting me use their services for one month.
I am sure i would have to call to cancel 1-2 days prior one-month end lol for them not to automatically charge my credit card.

74. Lisa Says:

comment to above

I was chatting live to someone who totally dismissed the fact that i do not get a dial tone when i pick up to call.

Furthermore, she asked me to upgrade when i complained about not able to hear the other party

No warnings for upgrades???

75. ds Says:

I just installed MJ on a fairly new vista, so far it works as promised..I would say that 99.9% of the problems I see are not the fault of MJ, but the computers that hold the MJ, but MJ obviously gets the bad rap when it does not go your way..are you running a good computer? or is it 5 years old? do you have good computer resources? Do you have a good phone, or some cheapy to get you by? are you using a quality DSL service, or the fly by night DSL? Computers change on a dime, and with that said, what worked one day may not work tomorrow…I have had software do that, worked fine for 6 months, then one day it just did not work anymore…Do you really think software broke? there is no such thing..something caused the software not to work anymore… as with MJ if it worked for for a while, then it does not, more then likely it is other issues at hand…I am not saying that the MJ will not malfunction, but I really think that 99.9% of problems are not with the MJ. Could it be improved? yes. I had a conversion using the MJ, the quality was more like a cell phone call, whereyou could hear most of it, in and out, but on the most part the call was 99.9% clear.

have a good one.

76. Lisa Says:

if i was informed i need to have a newer computer before installing MJ, than i would have not bothered. i did purchase a new phone and have high speed and is showing powerful signal on my wireless laptop as we speak.

Biggest wastage of my some 50 dollars.
First these guys do not have any technical support on phone, second the whole idea is ripoff. I have two computers vista and xp. Vista gives consistent echo voice. The chat tech help people keep on doing ping-pong with my system … change phone, reinstall, different USB port, upgrade. And when in the end when I really got pissed off they blamed that verizon is blocking VOIP. Later when I switched over to Comcast they started blaming Windows Vista. Later when I got one XP phone it worked for two days. Now it shows warning: you must plug in usb….. When I tried to take help when from Tech help chat the whole cycle started again. I just threw everything in junk.

82. Cathy Says:

I received MJ just last Friday. Installed it and everything worked great for 2 days. Found that I couldn’t call out and accept calls so I located the download files and deleted them. Plugged MJ back in and found phone to work properly.
My biggest problem is after MJ is plugged in, my computer slows right up, and finally freezes up. Has even told me that it can’t find the server. ????????
My computer is only 8 months old and has a huge hard drive and tons of memory.
I do have lite speed internet service from the cable company, which should be enough.
It is not a phone I can rely on, so I’m not giving up my land line just yet, but thought it would be great for saving me long distance charges, if I could get it to work!!!
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I really want to know..

85. G.J Says:

Hello guys!
I’ve read most of your complaints and I must say that some of them are kind of pathetic since it’s not like MJ is supposed to be perfect or anything. What did you expect for a $20/YEAR product?

As far as I’m concerned it works, but you’ll have to do a few tricks here and there. Don’t even waste your time trying to call customer service, your best bet will be to get on their website and chat with one of their agents. Also, it’s possible to change your email/passwords… go to my.magicjack.com

and as far as connection problems, I think getting a “powered usb hub” as many of you mentioned in your post should be very helpful. Also, if you get the message “usb device cannot be detected” let MJ plugged in until the blue light become steady (May take a minute or two depending on your computer). Also, have the upgrade file somewhere on your desktop, sometimes you’ll have to upgrade it in order for the software to display.

To place international calls, your best bet will be to get credits by purchasing minutes (using a credit card) at my.magicjack.com as opposed to trying to place calls directly if you don’t want to be overcharged. You will be charged for long distance calls (except within the U.S and Canada). For example most companies will charge between 25 to 30c/min to place a call to Haiti (Caribbean), while with MJ it’s 18c… you don’t save that much, but the price is still lower.

There’s still a lot of work to be done with this product which is why I think they’re being careful by limiting their customer service and all (imagine what the call volume would be?) I think they have the right idea, but now they need to make it better if they really want to make it a competitive product.

I’m getting my powered usb hub tomorrow at bestbuy and I’ll let you know whether it works or not. So far I can only place calls using my headset which works for me. However, using my phone will be much more appreciated.

Keep hope alive!

I used magic Jack for about 2 or 3 months during
that time the foiiowing problems ocurred.
!. The computer must be on to use the telephone,
it is impossible for me to leave my computer on all of the time. I was cut off while talking, the
conection would be noisey, hollow, unable to hear

I have a regular landline long distance but can’t place calls to Canada, so when I saw the short Podcast ad. on the MagicJack, I thought it will be a great services for me to use. I am now learning to do my homework before I buy into services like that, I started reading the customer reviews online, only to findout that 98% of all who bought the MJ are not satisfied with it and the services. Thank you all for putting this out there. You all are my “HEROS” you saved me and all Americans who getting ready to buy the MJ, that is if they will also read the product reviews.

88. Chuck W. Says:

Tee,
You may have shot yourself in the foot by not trying the Magic Jack. It works pretty well for the tens of thousands of users out there. It does not work well for some. The company in essence has no support if you have a problem so those with problems end up on forums like this. There are a couple of very extensive forums with solutions for most of the problems encountered by MJ users. So if you have $39.95 to spare and want to save a potentially large amount of money, purchase an MJ at your local Best Buy, Radio Shack or even QVC. That will allow you to return it locally with out the hassle of dealing with the MJ company. Also read these various forums carefully beforeyou buy anything from the MJ company such as extensions of your term of service. Good Luck

A week or two ago, I got a Magic Jack as a present from a very kind uncle :-) Unlike most of the posts here, installing it was a cinch, and it has worked great ever since, with the exception of one time when I was doing a heavy upload. I live outside the U.S. and have many relatives in America, so it’s great to be able to place and receive free calls. I hope that I don’t end up with a non-working product in a few months, but in the meantime, I am really happy with it. BTW, I assume that it helps that I reboot my computer every day, since it’s an office computer and I don’t need it on when I finish work for the day…

93. Del Says:

Hello~ I’ve been tolerating magic Jack for some eight months now..and with partial success. First, my computer was contstucted with threee USB ports…but, after changing from port to port for months, they no longer work with mj. So, I bot a new set of ports (they cost me about $21, with tax, and there are FOUR new USB ports) So, I thought “problem solved”! Now, they are failing also…over time. When it works, the phone is perfect. When it doesn’t work, it is a genuine pain. I’m still debating on signup for the second year, due in April. One thing I suggest for best reception is to be sure the phone line is no where near your power supply line to the computer or monitor…as this may cause the phone to ’skip’ …I’m sure most of us has had that occur from time to time. Also, it seems to me that the memory and caches must be cleared from time to time. I keep the ‘cookies’ cleaned out, and run defrag far more often than most. Some of the failures with this type sytem are due to the inability of some system boards in the different computers, and some of the older computers may fare better than some new computers. Try to avoid having ‘automatic’ events on your computer (avoid automatic installs of Window updates, for ex) as this imposes a load that the computer may not be able to handle. And yes, the best way for me to use mj is with a cable connection, not wireless. I’ve tried both. Last but not least, avoid having too many icons on your desk top. Any thing requiring “pointers” into your memory will interfere with magic jack, at least on this computer. If you play “Freecell” while talking on your mj phone, you will have problems. If you type while trying to use the phone, on this computer, your mj will shut down. Again, this is caused by the use of pointers, and also by the way the keyboard functions. Key boards are essentially a short circuit for each key used, so perhaps you can imagine how many temporary shorts are institued each time I type a line here. Merry Christmas, be patient, MJ is saving you serious money, if you make very many long distance calls. D. Hagan 12/14/2008

97. drbray Says:

This is the least expensive and probably the best telephone service that I have EVER used!

This service ONLY costs $19.95/year and with a 5 year license extension it costs only $12.00/year! That’s $1.67/month 1st year then $1.00/month each year thereafter.

Don’t believe any of the BAD PRESS you may hear about the service. I discovered what the “technical” problem was, because it actually happened to me. I was having audio and connection problems until I solved the technical problem of my computer’s USB bus drawing over 500 mA, actually 580 mA, with everything plugged into the bus.

My eMachine computer, Model T2882, only has a 250 Watt power supply and that was working at its limits with all the computer cards and USB devices that I had plugged into the machine were demanding current.

The attached article is how I solved the problem for less than $20.00!

I love Magic Jack! I ordered through their website on Christmas Eve and it was in my mailbox on the 29th! For those complaining about being charged immediately, you have to use a credit card, not a debit card. It is a card rule, not magic jack, but they send you an email explanation and give you the opportunity to modify your order. Even if you are charged immediately, you still get the 30 day trial and can send it back if you are unhappy with it. I haven’t had any issues with my MagicJack and I love it so far! I have had one pc issue and would appreciate any suggestions to fix it. I found a blog somewhere that suggested installing it on a different user to avoid the pop-ups. That worked great and the phone works fine when you log off and then log onto another user. I play a lot of video and video games and occasionally, the pc audio stops working. The phone still works fine when this happens. The only way I have found to correct this is to reboot. It is a little annoying but I am not even close to considering sending the Magic Jack back. I can reboot occasionally to save hundreds in phone bills! I am running XP on an HP Pavillion laptop and am not using a a/c powered usb. Audio driver is Conexant HD Audio. Any ideas? Thanks!

I have had my magicJack for about a week now. I keep having problems with people I talk to sounding like a cd skip or something like that. I’m not sure if it’s on the other end as well. I’ve talked to tech support at magicjack.com like 4-5 times now, and they’ve had me do everything from try a corded phone to formatting magicjack, twice to uninstalling and reinstalling. I don’t know if it’s the quality of phone that I’ve been using or what the problem is. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

108. admin Says:

@Linda,

Good you can at least use your Magic Jack with your Mac. I did have a thought that perhaps you have a program on your PC that could be interfering with the MJ? That would take a lot of trial and error to figure out though.

109. admin Says:

@Jim,

Are all of your calls getting the skip? I get skips sometimes, but mainly when calling a cell phone, and it always seems to be on the other end when getting the skips as I get them also on my regular landline phone. Try a couple of different phones to see if that helps.

110. Jim Says:

I’ve tried 3 different phones, but still have the same problems. HOwever, if I use my headset, it doesn’t make the strange noises.

111. admin Says:

Another thought: how long is the phone cord you are using between your computer and your phone? Magic Jack recommends a cord no longer than 6 feet. When Jim mentioned using his headset successfully it made me think that perhaps the problem with with the phone cord.

112. Jim Says:

I think it’s a standard length phone cord. Not a long one or anything like that.

113. admin Says:

Jim,

Have you used the phone cord with other phones to make sure it isn’t interfering in any way?

I can’t think of anything else right now…but I’ll keep researching it for you.

114. Jim Says:

I think I did try it with the other phones. However, one phone’s cord is attached to it, and won’t come off. I guess it’s made that way. For some reason, if no one is working on my computer, or has anything open, it hardly makes those noises at all.

The best part of Magic Jack:

I took a close look at my phone bill, which came out to around $20.00 for local land line. I took a closer look, and found that $10.00 of that $20.00 was–TAXES– federal, state, and local! Sometimes people are never satisfied. Considering everything to be perfect. magic jack is an amazing thing to have happen in this time when these phone companies are so greedy and monopolizing. I would imagine that half if not more are phone company employees afraid that if their companies are losing money then they may get the ax . So lets get on here and put down the product that may close their companies down. The product works as said, more can vouch for that than can say it doesn’t.As was said in some of the above comments ,at times that old messed up computer is the problem not to mention some are not to tech savvy and once an imagined problem occurs it’s a major nightmare for them. Many people that I know haven’t had a problem yet. Most of the time if you give something a chance and have patience things will work out. When things seem to work too well and we havn’t thought of it lets try and destroy it with the old class action suit to feed those other greedy ones the lawyers.

137. James B Says:

My Magicjack would reboot in the middle of a conversation and just about any time it felt like it, even when the phone was idle, causing the reboot icon to appear on the screen when I was in the middle of something like playing a game or as I said talking. The icon wouldnt go away and I would have to pull the MJ plug to stop it.
This reboot problem would happen just about every 20/30 minutes continuasly!
The MJ techs tried to fix the problem for over 6 months but they really didnt have a clue.
Yesterday I recieved a replacement MJ. I hope this one works ok.

138. Rick Bailey Says:

I have several magic jacks in use. They do well when connected to USB 2.0 on a PC that does not lag. If the PC lags the phone service is jumpy. The current output of the M J to the telephone ringer sux. I wanted to use it to feed all the house phones. If you have a ringer with a heavy load or several ringers turned on it will not ring. You need a phone with the lowest current ringer. Usually the cheap phones use a small audio beeper type ringer that works well. It will never ring a phone with a real bell. Kicking USB 5 volts up to 50 + volts is a problem since you lose current. Magic Jack should be designed with an external power supply to plug in for ringers if needed. (Magic Jack 2 PLEASE??!!)

139. Linda Says:

A couple months ago, I reported that I was unable to get MagicJack to work on my Sony laptop running XP. When the magicJack window appeared, there was a message “please connect to the internet” even though I had a good internet connection. After trying everything I could think of including using a powered USB hub, I gave up. Over the last two months, there have been a number automatic updates to my system, so today I tried MagicJack again and it works perfectly. My thought is that there may have been something in the updates that made the difference. In case anyone else has this problem, it might be worth making sure the system software is up to date.

140. Ayron Sterns Says:

I just bought a new computer, a mac, and bought the magic jack hoping to have a reliable home phone family and friends could call me on. But ever since I hooked it up(which was easy to do) my calls cut in and out every call I made-over and over again. Every call. Not just here and there. Anyways, I was reading other people’s complaints and it seems that a lot of other people are experiencing this as well. I have Verizon DSL at the midgrade speed-something like 3.0 mps. Fast enough for MagicJack. What I was doing was running the supplied router that came with the Verizon package which included a built-in wireless router to run my computer with without the cables(of course). So I did a lot of research, didn’t even call customer support, and someone out there gave me the solution I needed without calling. That person suggested that I not use the wireless and hardwire it instead using an ethernet cable. Granted, this does have its drawbacks, but ever since I did that every call has been perfect. So, some of you may be able to get away with cheap home phone service with reliability just by using the ethernet cable instead of the wireless router. Heck, if its close enough, keep a spare ethernet cable close by, unplugged from your computer(still using the wireless) and when a call does come, quickly hook in the ethernet cable for a near perfect call with no cutting in and out problems. This is a solution that worked for me and maybe for some of you out there too. Good luck.

141. Oliver Says:

Here’s my experience, I tried to purchase the Magic Jack and the transaction was declined – the reason that Magic Jack system gave was “DECLINE 05 The 3 or 4 digit Card Security Code does not match” Exact Quote for those of you that try to tell others that people are here to complain without cause – no one has the time to waste.

To add insult to injury, Magic Jack has an agreement with certain credit card companies to make a small transaction to verify the credit card. Even though the transaction was declined supposedly for the 3-digit code, Magic Jack charges the card each time that you (the customer) tries to correct the 3-digit code. This happened to me because I thought that I had been entering the wrong information so I tried several times and each time there was a charge on the credit card.

142. hector Says:

hi to everyone! i bought my magic jack device from a canadian who is residing here in the philippines on march 17, 2009.
i had trouble fixing to make the device work, and with quick thinking i realized that i was using windows vista as my operating system.
i am not a very technical person but i had the hunch that vista was the culprit in hindering magic jack’s proper operation.
so what i did to eliminate the problem is simply rolling back from vista to win xp.
at first i was receiving message like “plug magic jack to usb port” flashing in red letters. but the funny thing about that is the fact the usb device is already connected…that i found out when i was still on with vista. during that process i was still able to sign up for the registration and have come to the point wherein i got my magic jack assigned phone number and able to finish the whole process of registering.
i thought to myself that what magic jack needed at that time is a computer re-start thing to make it work. RE-BOOTED….voila! nothing works! the flashing red warning notice appeared on my screen again! at an instant i’ve decided to de-install vista and rolled back to win xp…
that did the quick fix for my device to finally get it working!
i plugged the magic jack back to the usb port and it loaded smoothly and got recognized by the computer as an external device and after that i initially started my first call to new york where my sister lives and ever since that day until now i enjoyed the service like free calls and i’ve talked my way through friends and relatives in the u.s. and to some in canada.

for those having some problems with their magic jack units like the blue led indicator never lits up when plugged into the the usb port, there are only two points to discover…either the unit is a defective one or perhaps it will only work with a powered usb port. just keep on trying until you get it to work for you guys.

if you have a digital phone or a wireless phone (both units should be a.c. powered) that will surely fix your problem about the quality of audio and the functionality of your MJ device. i have tried so many analog phones and nothing seem to work well with my MJ at first. finding the COMPATIBLE analog phone with your MJ is a pain in the ass! i strongly suggest you try what i personally recommend to you and you will be out of that problem in a jiffy! you may also try using a headset (best if you could do away with a bluetooth) you can talk on the headset while doing some work and it gives you freedom to walk around.

unplug your MJ device from your computer, and if there is another computer or laptop with active internet connection in your home or office, plug that MJ device on that separate pc (active online)IT WILL CONFIGURE YOUR MJ AUTOMATICALLY…just wait until it is done and you will see a message on your MJ SOFTPHONE like “READY TO CALL” and your MJ will operate normally on every pc or laptop you will use and you can make calls right away and on every pc or laptop…i hope this resolves your particular problem area with MJ. 147. Diego Says:

I’m a happy user. I’ll try to help with some of the issues with MJ.

USB ports.
MJ demands a powered USB port. If your computer (it’s amazing how many computers don’t have powered USB ports) dosen’t have one, please buy a powered hub (about $35 dls), for example, D-Link has a nice one (http://dlink.com/products/?pid=149), but almost every computer sotre has a similar model, sometimes more cheaper.

Phone not ringing/Low volume.
There’s a thing called “phone load”, it’s simply how much power the hpone demands from the analog line. Cheap asian phones have a phone load of 2.0 A good phone (usually wireless phones have an internal power supply that reduces phone load) has a load of 0.5.
Also, if the USB port don’t have enough power, the phone may not work.

Dropped calls/randon silence/noise.
These can be due to two things:
- Dirty PC. Lots of malware, viruses, etc, lots of “nice” little applications, like toolbars, smileys and so many stuoid things like that. Extremally fragmented hard disk, not enough RAM. Concurrent downloading (or virus spamming, etc) while using MJ. Bad internet service (this is very common, specially if the internet provider offers phone service also, they usually block Vonage, Skype, MJ, etc; obviously they won’t admit it). Cheap phone (see USB ports). bad router/firewall programming.
- The called party has a bad telephone service provider, usually they also use IP as their communications backbone.

My MagicJack worked for a few hours.
Then it started slowing down (almost completely freezing up) the computer.
Tech support worked for about an hour with all sorts of changes and deletions in the Registry database and folders (i.e. one named mjusbsp), but the problem persisted. So I will return it for a refund. I’m sure some people have had no problems, but from the list above, way too many people have had way too many problems. That does not bode well for this product, and it wouldn’t surprise me to see class action lawsuits if they refuse to make refunds. I bought mine at Best Buy, who will make a refund. For those that want to give it a try, it might be a good idea to get a MagicJack at a retailer they can deal with in a timely manner.

161. admin Says:

d.a.n,

I agree, if you can purchase a Magic Jack locally, it will be easier to either exchange it or get a refund. You would also have more of the 30 days to try it out.

I had the same problem that you did. Using an a/c powered usb hub solved the problem for me.

162. chris Says:

I’ve had MJ for a while now and it works great. Just wish i could take my landline number with it.For Magic Jack to be successful you need to:

1.Have powered USB port ebay for about $10 shipped Walmart for about $20.

2 Have a good anti-virus / spyware software and up to date on your computer. Make sure you user it also.

3 Make sure Windows(your operating system) is up to date.

4 Defragment your computer occasionally about every 3-4 months depending on usage.( to do this go to START , Programs , Accessories , Sytem Tools , Disk Defragment) and let it run

5 Restart your computer once a week.

If you do these steps you should not have a problem

Will Magic Jack work on an older PC with USB 2.0 on a PCI card? OS is Win XP Pro.

They just say plug it into a USB port, but their are older PC’s that will run Win XP that have USB 1.1.

Does it have to be a high speed USB 2.0 chipset on the motherboard to work VoIP ie Magic Jack?

165. admin Says:

@Bull,

The higher speed you have, the more successful you’ll be with running magic jack. You could also try using it with an external a/c powered usb hub but if your computer runs too slow you may still have a problem.

166. golfcartguy Says:

I too have problems with mj. In the beginning, it would freeze the computer, make it so slow, etc. There is a conflict with mj and any dvd, or cd burning software. Mj creates a virtual cd rom on your drive, and will lock the computer up. (I went through 3 mj’s, returning to store, until I figured it out) , of course 6 hours with tech, (joke). New problem. I can dial out just fine, however if anyone calls me they get a ‘telephone number is temporarily out of service’ message. (they must think I didn’t pay the bill.??)

Anyone have the same problem? And if so, how did you solve it?

By the way, I bought another used computer just for the mj. So I did not have to get rid of my dvd copying programs etc.

167. Jim C Says:

I wish I had seen this website before I ditched my phone co and bought Magic Jack. Their online chat people have no idea what they are doing. I have contacted them so many times that I can guess what they are going to say before they say it. My family and friends are furious at me for getting Magic Jack, half of time they call me they get an “ALL CIRCUITS ARE BUSY” message. I laugh every time my Magic Jack starts up and says “TELL YOUR FRIENDS ABOUT MAGIC JACK”.

172. Richard Says:

This alone is a great argument for making the darn thing work under Linux.

173. Eric Says:

I have MJ for almost 6 months now. I live in Brazil and talk to my family in Florida all the time, night and day, and MJ works just fine. I mean, it’s reliable, but the quality of the calls it’s a bit on the poor side. The calls rarely drops, but the voice kind of breaks up in the middle of words (I think that’s called jitter).
I wonder if anyone has a solution to improve the call quality, that aside it’s pretty good.

178. admin Says:

I am connected to the internet, and double clicking does nothing. I do get a dial tone on my phone, but when I dial a number, it goes nowhere. I am having problems using Magic-Jack with a computer that is running McAfee. Does anyone know how to get Magic-Jack to work without having to disable McAfee or any like virus software??

Thank you

188. admin Says:

@Robin S – You might need to disable your firewall while installing magic jack, then you can enable it again after installation.

@Sree – Your user id is probably the email address you used during registration. You can go to http://my.magicjack.com and click on the “remind me by email” button to retrieve the password.

@Karen & Doug Thurman – That skipping could be caused by your internet connection. Also try using different phones with your MJ to see if that helps alleviate the problem.

@Jaime – I’m running MagicJack with Norton without any problems. You may want to contact their customer service to see if they have any advice for McAfee. I can understand having to disable it during installation, but not for when you want to use it…that’s not good! Here is the link to their customer service page:

If you have a usb port that goes with your machine (built-in), you may use any port for your MJ unit. BUT, if you have an extra usb port which you may have probably purchased and physically inserted it on your PCI slot, things will never work with your MJ. if you use this device in isolation with no other non bandwidth programs running, no other bandwidth programs running, it works great. Otherwise watch out… It starts to audio fall apart and the only way to resolve is to restart the computer and totally refresh the drivers. People you talk to say,,, i can only hear every third word.. audio is breaking up…. this device is way too fussy against working correctly against other programs running along with it/system resources and bandwidth being shared with it. Its by no means excusable, because I do not have one single program on this computer that can’t co exist along with other programs running at the same time. The only one that can’t co exist and stand up to the test is the magic jack. The problem happens even with non internet software running along side it. They need to improve on this problem. LINDA ON JULY 1ST — I HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM!!! I have spent (WASTED) hours on with tech support. The incessant beeping is frustrating to the callers. They have not been able to help? Anyone know how to fix?

207. admin Says:

about the beeping:

I have read that the upgrade magicjack had in June may help fix this problem so make sure you have the upgrade. Also, this beeping problems seems to be occuring in other types of voip phones as well.

208. Thomas H Smith Says:

This is the third time that I have contacted you about my service with magicjack. Since the beginning of July I have been without phone service and this is the only phone that I have. My phone number is xxx-xxx-xxxx and my email is (removed for privacy). I have sent you the new VISA Debit card number (removed for privacy) and the expiration date (xx/xx) and the number from the back of the card is xxxx. Please take the $19.95 from the new VISA Debit card I have given you and put my phone back on.

Thank you very much and please do ASAP as I need my phone desperatly as I am on disability through the VA.

Thank you very much.

on the contrary I have many problems with the magic, I have one month that he/she buys it and I have two weeks with connection problems with the servant of it throws error 3 and error 6 continually and these errors are solved alone without making anything and when but I need it it fails me.

211. Ed Says:

I’ve had Magic Jack for a couple of months and began having problems with call quality and interference a couple of weeks ago. Had to unplug and replug Magic Jack often. After reading blogs, I got an AC powered USB port and the problems seemed to have cleared. I’ll have to see how it goes for the future. The sellers really should tell us that we must have that for it to work properly and maybe charge a little more and bundle one with it. Unfortunately customer service is virtually non existant. Typing back and forth for hours is useless. Worst cust svc I’ve ever come across.

212. admin Says:

@Ed,

An a/c powered usb hub really seems to solve a lot of problems with the magic jack. On the packaging (at least the one I have) it does say you may need one for the extra power but it probably should be recommended to only use it with one.

213. sid Says:

Just a note on my MJ experience.

Had it for three weeks now, just cancelled my cable phone service.

Call quality has been great, phone rings every time, and no trouble placing calls.

My only complaint is that though my area code (210) showed to be available when I ordered MJ, on receipt, I found it was not, so I have an (830) area code, but I can live with that.

My computer is a 6 year old Dell P4 2.53 running XP Home, and with USB 1.0, so I have MJ plugged into a PCI USB 2.0 add-on card. My internet connection for this computer is over my wireless G USB adapter.

I was paying $29.00 a month for cable phone service that failed to ring my phone on a weekly basis, and without voicemail, so the $32.00 I spent on MJ and a years service is so far looking pretty good.

Just wanted to share my good experience with this product on what is less than an optimal or state of the art hardware setup.

214. admin Says:

@sid,

Thank you visiting and for sharing your positive experience with us!

215. Kevin Says:

I just hooked up the magic jack when i had my DSL service hooked up. The only thing that bothers me is that the soft phone software pops up everytime there is a call or when I use the phone. It is really annoying and was wondering if anyone thought the same thing or if anyone has a solution for that.

I did not see any settings so far for “removing soft phone from popping up”. Except i was hoping there was an answer or some sort of solution for that.

216. Frank Says:

MJ worked great first few months after getting it. connected to my onboard USB port and never had any issues with it at all. Then out of nowhere the ’softphone’ would not load and, like so many others, I would get the Red letter message saying that it is not connected to a USB port. Yeah, right…I love that message, that message would never appear in the first place if the MJ was not connected to a port. An AC powered Hub did not fix my problem either. After many nights of trial and error I found the culprit that was preventing MJ from loading corretly. A background program called “AnyDVD” was (and still is) detecting the MJ as a CD. Turning off AnyDVD allowes my MJ to load and work…untill I manualy launch AnyDVD and everything freezes. Looks like the makers of AnyDVD and MJ need to work together and find a solution to the conflict. I suspect DVD43 would have the same issue with MJ, but I don’t have that software.

217. John Says:

ok i use magic jack on cable xp my pc up to date lot memory and big hard drive . i have to keep clicking on update to be able get softphone come up. i put me a icon on my desktop to connect it. only way i can use it. i tryed reinstall magic jack still same problem. i even bought usb ac adapter. sometimes it freez my screen till it will connect. today it took about hour before i could get connected.

225. Frank Says:

Latonya, don’t take every posting you read so serious. I do love my MJ, when it works like it is suppose to. Yes it saves me lots of money on a phone bill. I’ve been using VOIP for over 5 years so I know how these things work. This is the first VOIP device that has given me so much trouble. The dreaded Warning stating “the MagicJack must be plugged into USB” is one of the most troublesome issues. Let’s face it, Latonya; no one is ever going to receive that message UNLESS the MJ “IS” already plugged into a USB port. Plugging the MJ into a port is what launches that install program and gives you the little MJ icon on your desktop screen which will eventually, if all goes right, give you the ’softphone’. Another issue that I and others have is the softphone not save contacts that have been added to the list. I cannot turn off or reboot my computer without loosing every contact and number I have added to my MJ list. The issues these people have are legit issues. So instead of telling Us to stop complaining and go back to another provider is it posible that you could give some helpful suggestions…like any issues you may have had and found a work around for? We all know the MJ will save us money that is why we purchased them. Now let’s get back to fixing the MJ issues. Thank you, Frank

I purchased a Magicjack to use as a second phone line to run my credit card reader at my business. I figured I would not have to tie up my main business line when the credit card machine dialed out. After a couple of hours I had to disconnect it. About 3 out of 4 times the credit card reader would fail to connect. The soft phone program constantly popping up on my point of sale PC is also really irritating. I may still try and use it for my FAX machine, but I am not at all confident that the call quality will be where it needs to be to even FAX. Pretty dissapointed.

233. Frank Says:

hazel; what part of the “downloading of the software are you having issues with? Do you receive an Icon looking like the MJ device on your desktop screan saying something to the point of new software downloading, or are you looking for the MJ update.exe file? If so that file can be gotton directly from the MJ website.

234. Frank Says:

I’ll use my MJ untill the end of my first year and them go back to Skype. I never had any issues with skype. Yes it cost just a bit more than the MJ for the same service but man there are zero headaches with it. Anyone that cannot get the MJ working I’d recomend checking into Skype. I remember I paid about $50.00US a year for my phone number and $3.00 per month for unlimited calling to landline and cell phones nationwide. That is still very cheap and I had great service.

235. Tim Discher Says:

After reviewing some 234 MJ problems, about 130 seem to identify with my problem…just like everyone else, the customer service, altho courteous, do not solve the problem. I have the “tone” problem (end user hears it only) but everything else works fine except that no one in my area code can call me (including myself using my landline)….MJ said that their “engineering” was looking into it….I ordered 2nd (replacement) MJ and still the same problem…I have the highest bandwidth cable internet, XP, 1.7mhz, 1.5M RAM,2.0USB and I do get fading sometimes…I can live with most except inability of people in my area code (903) not able to call me…(msg sez unable to complete call, hang up and try again)..anyone have a solution?

236. Edward Richardson Says:

I got “upgraded” 5 days ago. Before the upgrade my MJ worked fine. Since upgrade, I get locked up with a “out of memory” error. My PC has 4GB installed and only using about 40% of that. I chatted with suppport and they have no solution…they couldn’t even undo the upgrade and make it work. They have engineering working on the problem and they will get back to me???
I think the problem is with the memory IN the MJ.

For those who cannot get calls in own area code…have callers use all 10 digits even if in same area code. MJ is based on a national system that may not recognize what is local to you.

Anyone with ideas on the memory problem please email me eerichardson@comcast.net

238. Panther42 Says:

Here’s the real kicker which is probably why some people are or will be charged for calling to MJ phone numbers…
“There is another interesting point on how Magic Jack makes their money. The folks at Magic Jack get their numbers for free while others have to buy them. When a customer from another phone company calls a Magic Jack client, Magic Jack gets to bill the other company.”
Don’t think these “other” companies won’t want to pass the buck off to their customers originating the calls.

239. radwarhq Says:

@Edward Richardson,
It could be you are half correct about the flashrom (memory) in the mj: if the first upgrade attempt failed, the mj flashrom may be corrupted. This is worse case and i have no suggestions here except to rma the mj device. Can you confirm the virtual drives mount when the m/j is connected? I just noticed the first virtual drive (contains files autorun.exe & autorunu.exe) is read only while the second virtual drive is r/w to save settings and contacts. I suspect the corruption is on the first v-drive. I wonder if the softphone would load if manually launched from cd-rom (ie. a copy of the good files on the first v-drive)?

@all,
It should be no surprise the ’software engineers’ who coded the mj firmware are not experts; otherwise the product would be more stable and compatible. i am no expert on this circuit/firmware however i suspect you will find a lot of underground info on the hardware AND software on google if not now then very soon.
Also note the terms of service spell out this kind of ‘hacking’ will void your account.
That said: accept the hardware and dodgy software are only an interface to the mj network. In my experience with mj (about five months) the [mj] network backbone (and stable connection to it) is where most issues persist; not related to your hardware or their $39.95 ‘product’ but their phone service. If the customer support they provide is any indication of their ability to provide reliable phone service, god help us all!
Again, refer to the terms of service: section 16: NO WARRANTIES
what more could you want from your home phone provider??

I got magic jack in March, started using by the end of April, and by the end of May they restricted My out-bound calling feature. I don’t use the phone that often and I work, am in school, do volunteer work, and raise two teenage Children by Myself. I don’t have the Money to just give away to magic jack system, and the customer service is horrific to add.
The only “Jacked” I got was My money, and to this Day I can’t make out-bound calls on this service. I had Hi hopes for this company, Now I just hope. Your Wrong! Magic Jack, Wrong!!! I tell Ya.

248. Tish Frame Says:

I have had MagicJack for just over a year. I renewed it for just one more year, because when it works, it saves me lots of money. HOWEVER….I used to have to “upgrade” it just about weekly by hitting the FIX button that USED to be on the faceplate image. They apparently had so much traffic at that site that now they have totally removed the FIX button. INTERESTING, n’est pas? Some that I have called ( I kept my phone line, and receive calls on my regular phone) have complained about noise on the line. I don’t hear it, so I have no idea how bad it is. I have left messages on my home answering machine and cell phone and the sound was clear. But MagicJack is always questionable. Today it was repeatedly suddenly disappearing then rebooting on my computer. So I unplugged it, left it off for an hour, and replugged it. So far, so good…..
The product is completely unreliable. Works great when it works. Zero customer service. I am trying something new, Google Voice, which seems to work well so far. More hassle to dial, but it also works when the computer is not on, so in that regard, a better product. And no noise on the line. Probably will not renew MagicJack again.

253. SquiggysMom Says:

Here are the problems I have encountered: Sometimes a call just drops for no reason. I will be talking and notice that the other person is no longer responding, Or, they have stopped being able to hear me and think I have hung up, so they hang up. This happens every two or three calls. Sometimes I can talk for almost an hour with no problems. Another problem is that people complain that it sounds like I am pressing the number keys while I am talking, because, they are hearing “beep, beep, beep” during the conversation. In almost every call, there are moments when I hear “dead air” while I am talking. It causes me to say “Are you still there?” several times during a conversation; annoying to me and to the person I am talking to. Of course, sometimes when I hear the “dead air” sound, the connection has actually dropped. I also can’t dial 877 numbers. I don’t know if anyone else is having that problem. Otherwise, I am happy with the Magic Jack. I would not be able to have a home phone line any other way, due to the cost. I just hope, one day, that they are able to figure out a way that would allow it to stay on when the computer is in sleep mode. That would be great. It’s a wonderful device.

254. Matthew B Says:

Like everyone else I had problems with majic jack. Yes, support sux. Don’t bother with them. I have a big problem and I email Dan the creator and problem was fixed within 12 hours although his support people said it was not possible. FIOS by verizon works very well with Mjack. Sound is so clear you would never know it wasn’t a land line. Fios also allows the fax to work without a flaw. Now if they would wire the device right to the router so the computer didn’t have to stay on and if they would let you shut off or change number of wrings on the voice mail the I would give them a 10. Theres another device out there that works off the router but Majic Jack is superior and better catch up before they get to be better. I disabled and I can’t tell you how much I’ve saved calling friends and Doctors on this wonderful device. One other thing, don’t use and old piece of junk computer and make sure your firewalls and all the other crap you have running doesn’t interfear with majic jack. So many problems are created by the user.

256. carol steger Says:

the same thing happen with my magic will not let the computer recognize e-mail address or pass word. how do i fix this

257. B. Crocker Says:

Magicjack is a useful tool if used for limited purposes. I was able to strip my land lines down to $17.00/mo from $60/mo by using magicjack for outgoing calls only. It forwards to one of my land lines which is plugged into the computer, for superior sound. No one has ever mentioned that it sounds inferior. I turn off the computer at nite, and in an emergency, my land lines are working. The problem I have with it about 3 times/week, is the message to “plug in your magicjack”, and there is no dial tone until this is plugged and unplugged. They will have to fix these problems to go forward. But it’s a great way to beat the phone companies and taxes.

To all of you people out there cyring about the MJ not working and talking about a class action law suit-please, please quit taking up bandwidth with your whining. Majic Jack is a phenomenal idea that works almost all of the time when the requirements are met. I own a computer store and we process over 600 computers a month for repair. A lack of end user knowledge is probably responsible for about 60% of the computer problems we see. The whole point with majic Jack is the price. If they had a huge support team to walk people through even the basics of what they need to make this work, the price point would not be $39.95.
It is astounding to me that an attorney who probably routinely spends that amount on a meal wants to sue MJ. MJ is cutting into traditional phone business profits. If you want to sue someone, sue the cell phone companies or computer manufactures that produce trash computers and offer ridiculous support. Please.. come on… a company that is a true inovator that has hit the right price point for a great product. Leave them alone.. go sue someone that deserves to be sued. You might go after them because they dont have a huge legal team at their disposal like the big companies. It just makes me ill when I see garbage like this on these pages. I’m out. My majic Jack works great by the way. If it quits, it quits.. but I bet it doesnt… unless something on my end changes… The I just uninstall, re-install and move one..

Magic Jack is an excellent device. Please if you have any problem, the first thing you would do is to click on MENU. Next click on ADVANCED USERS and finally click on RUN MAGICFIX. This will fix the problem. I have been using Magic Jack for a month now and have no problem with it. When problem occur I would simply click on menu, advanced users, and run majicfix. This gets the problem resolved.

Thinking maybe I would give it up after having it for at least 5 years. Thank heavens I didn’t cut it off, had to call them back and get back my unlimited calling. Vontage is the best and well worth it. Nice idea MagicJack if you would only work. My son was going to get it but are not sure now. I will stick to what always works and that is Vontage!

266. Go Navy Mike Says:

Well I too am one that is going to complain but I haven’t read any other people complaining about sound quality. My problem is that quite often while I am talking it starts to sound like an echo or re-verb to the point making the call incomprehensible and the people on the other end don’t know it’s happening so they think you’re being rude then sometimes they hang up. I’ve run MagicFix, checked speakers and mics but to no avail. Any solutions out there? Thanks.

Majic-Jack, cool idead. How ever there is no fix and there is no refund. Tech support is using flash cards, and can not give you anyreal advice or they will be fired. I live not so far away from their offices. It has been said buy a previous person of theirs. “man we try to get all right for everyone” , ” but is all the other things out there (net) that mess’es everything up”
Best advice is use it, it is good as it’s going to get, its cool, but ” do not trust your life to it”

269. Al Says:

Magic Jack was fine the first time or two I used it. Then the problems began, the latest of which is that every time I open a browser or almost any other software program, including my e-mail (Outlook 2003), Magic Jack goes offline. Sometimes it will restart automatically, and sometimes it won’t. Another thing that started recently is having to log in, using my e-mail address and password that I used to register the MJ. Every time I restart the computer or when it goes offline on its own, I have to log back in before I can use it. That is just a minor annoyance compared to the other problems. When talking to someone, the connection is choppy, dropping words or whole sentences. It’s identical to going through an area with poor reception with a cell phone. Numerous times the call will be crystal clear one minute, and then dropped for no apparent reason.

At first I thought the choppiness and dropped words and phrases was due to my network connection. I have a wireless connection that is received from a router connected to the cable modem. The location of my computer is such that I have to use a wireless adapter. With wireless, data is transmitted in packets. That’s fine for downloading and working online with a keyboard, or even for watching videos, etc., online. However, for a live phone conversation, where the information is a constant stream of data, the results are as I described. As stated, I thought that was the problem until I spoke with several people who used Magic Jack on hard wired broadband and cable modems. They had the same problem. Sometimes it’s really bad, and sometimes there’s hardly a skip at all. It reminds me of the phone systems back when I was a little kid.

Another problem is that if I plug in a flash drive, it will kick Magic Jack offline every time. Magic Jack is just way too sensitive, which indicates poor design.

Another thing that has developed on its own recently is that sometimes when I try to make a call, I’ll get an error message that “there is no disc in the drive you are trying to access. Please insert a disc and try again…” So, now it’s sometimes being detected by my XP operating system as a CD or DVD drive. It has always listed itself as a “mass storage” device.

The skip and dropped calls are a common problem among all the people I know who have used it. The concept is good, but the technology that Magic Jack is using is woefully inadequate. It’s definitely NOT ready for prime time. It would be a huge mistake to try to use Magic Jack for any purpose other than quick short calls to family and friends. It’s definitely not suitable for any business calls at all.

For 911 calls, it’s iffy. I would be afraid that Magic Jack would decide to go offline while I’m trying to get some life saving emergency medical help.

Last night my Magic Jack went offline, and it still hasn’t restarted.

One other pet peeve with Magic Jack is the asinine error message that pops up sometimes. It reads something to the effect of, “Magic Jack must be plugged into a USB port…”

Well, if it wasn’t plugged into a USB port, then it wouldn’t be working to generate that utterly stupid error message, would it?

The developers need to do some research and development to get the bugs out of these stupid things!

That’s my experience with Magic Jack. I’ll never buy another one unless they completely redesign it and get out all the bugs.

270. Sarah Bosse Says:

Bought a MJ about a week ago. I started having a lot of problems, including:

* Person I was calling could not hear me.
* I could not hear person I called.
* Sometimes neither of us could hear one another!
* It worked about 50% of the time.
* It started to echo.

I was able to chat easily with a technician through the MJ website. You have to first type in your problem/question and then a picture link pops up that you can click to connect via chat session with a live person. They had me make a few changes and try calling.

None of the changes helped. So the woman I spoke with (Delia) referred me on to their higher-up tech support.

The higher-up tech asked me to do a speed test (http://speedtest.net/) for both my download and upload speed for my ISP. I gave her the reported numbers, which satisfied her. She asked me if I was using the USB Extension Cord provided with my MJ. I told her I was. She told me to unplug my MJ from the extension cord and plug it directly into the USB port on my computer. POOF! All problems solved with the next call and even call quality and volume were much much better!! She said my MJ just needed more power from the USB port which it wasn’t getting using the USB extension cord.

Lesson: If possible given your configuration, ditch the USB Extension Cord – it’s junk.

It is too bad MJ includes a piece of hardware with their product that does not work well. The MJ works fine without the cord. I wish they would include a USB extension cord that wouldn’t reflect poorly on the quality of their main product, the Magic Jack itself.

Anyhow, I was very pleased with customer support. They were pretty quick and I felt they were knowledgeable and didn’t keep me working with a first-level tech when I needed a higher-up tech to tell me not to use the Extension Cord (which should be something they try FIRST rather than changing computer settings). All in all, I’m pleased and excited to use my now-well-working MJ.

A commenter had said that he was in trouble because his MJ wasn’t working and now he has to return it. He had put the MJ number on his business cards. OOPS! I have been using Google Voice (you can buy an invite on Ebay for a few bucks) and the number I chose through Google Voice to give out to people. I have control of that number and how it is used. Therefore, even if my MJ did die and I had to replace it, I could still get and receive calls because I’d just add the new MJ number as a phone to work with my Google Voice number. An easy, inexpensive solution to number porting and transfer.

Cheers!

271. Ernie Says:

I have been having problems with the magicjack for about two months now. There tech support SUCKS! The only support the have is canned answers. I found an email address that is supposed to be for one of the inventors. Figured I’d speak with them to find out how to go about getting replacement hardware.

All of my problems started after the end of my first years service. After finding it reliable I decided to elect the five year renewal. A month afterwards I noticed some strange numbers on my softphone. I pressed the send button and a recording came on that said “You have reached the YMAX test call center, test complete.” Since that day, I have had nothing but problems with the magicjack. I am wondering if there are others out there that have experienced the same problem. Does this number combination downgrades your service once they get your money and your refund period for a refund on your credit card has passed. (Noted that it’s not a phone number – its a string series of numbers and characters)

My biggest probably is getting calls to connect. Tech supports answers are always the same. Remove your router from your modem… well, how to you do that to a DSL Modem / Router. They are not technical – and they are trying to tell me that’s the problem.

I have sent emails back and forth to them. Several times in the email they tried to tell me to do something another tech already had me do. So that tells me they don’t even keep track of the problems. I worked for Compaq and HP as a third level tech supporting networks, desktops and servers for 7 years – I guess to them I don’t know what I’m talking about.

I ask them how I could port my number over. They ignored the question. So, I have now dedicated myself to posting a blog every time I have an incomplete call with the magicjack.

Today I have had a total of 8 incomplete calls. I’ve restarted, rebooted, reinstalled. Still the same probably.

My review of the magicjack – first year was ok service – second year and beyond, you’ve been ripped off. DO NOT USE THE MAGICJACK FOR BUSINESS PHONE LINES.

More to come Mr. Dan Borislow (inventor) Dan@magicjack.com your product SUCKS!

Magicjack working fine a couple of weeks. Today, a small green screen appeared. It said, “WAIT.. don’t go on”(or words to that effect). I waited while it put 4 dots, one then 2…; then dots went away and did it again. I waited until it came back normal. Then tried to place several 800, 866, 877 numer call. Dead. Can’t do any 800 numbers. Can regular area call numbers. Tried calling my cell phone several times. Worked OK several times. Why can’t I get 800 #s??? Shut down computer several times and start again. NO go… Pulled MJ properly with “safely remove” XP feature and then tried other USB port on HP laptop to no avail. Can’t call Magicjack on their 800 # to fix. Anyone got a suggestion??? E-mail Jerry Berry

Because I can’t call MJ because (it’s an 800 number), and cannot call 800#s on my cell (I am using my daughter’s minute and am restricted NOT to call any 800#s. How can I fix this. I have cancelled my ATT land line because with MJ, I don’t need it. Jerry at

I bought the Magic Jack to send to my son in Thailand. They told me I would have to register the MJ her to get a local number. However when I plug the MJ into my computer it could not connect to the internet or run the update program so I could get to the registration page. I have DSL and accessing the internet is not a problem. I spent 3hrs chatting to 3 different technican to try to resolve the problem with no resolution. I cannot enable my MS onecare virus scan software which they tried to work around it. Any suggestion because since I opened the package Radio Shack will not return my money, only a store credit. Wish I had read comments before buying this thing.

276. Alicia Mayo Says:

I am having the same problems with my computer freezing and the softphone disappearing and reappearing as well as the red letter warning to plug it into a USB. However, I am also having another problem. I purchased mine at a Radio Shack and paid for the Service Plan. Less than 3 months later, one of the “prongs” that lead from inside the USB connector to the inside of the Magic Jack has broken. Radio Shack says it is a manufacturing defect and they will not replace it. Magic Jack said that since we did not purchase it from them, they will not repair or replace it either. My husband and I use this as our only phone!!! What to do? Any suggestions? e-mail me at ali-pic5870@hotmail.com with “Magic Jack help” in the subject column. Thanks.

2. I search all of my files including system files for Magic Jack and tiger jet and deleted all of the files that I found.

3. I reinstalled magic jack and had the same problem.

4. I plugged the magic jack into my laptop and it worked.

5. Based on the afore mentioned, I have concluded that their continues to be some changes made to my desktop that I can’t find and return to pre magic jack condition.

Same problem, same hardware… here’s how I solved it:

The fault is (apparently) caused by 3rd party CD-burning software installing invalid/faulty “filters” on top of your basic CD drivers. When these go wrong, windows has problems starting the driver successfully.

Fortunately, you can get rid of these filters with a quick registry edit:

1. Run regedit

2. Navigate to the following key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

3. Delete the “UpperFilters” entry

4. Delete the “LowerFilters” entry

5. Close regedit

6. Reboot your machine

Voila! – your drive should be back :)

I tried this and finally Magic Jack is working fine.

279. James Says:

I used Magic Jack’s online tech support and it did help improve the service from terrible to almost usable. Previously I was not able to make calls to many local numbers (it would say active and ring a few times, then just silence). Right after they did updates (on their side and did a firmware update on my side) I was able to call a number that would not work that morning. But I still hear echo on some calls and very often the other party cannot hear anything but when I call back it is fine. This is very frustrating when put in a queue for 20 minutes waiting to speak to a customer service rep and then finding out they can’t hear anything! Also if you ever have to use real FAX you can pretty much forget it and even Magic Jack says then don’t support FAX service. So I’ve been using online FAX and scanning in documents that aren’t in electronic form (somewhat of a pain but I don’t FAX that much). Would rate Magic Jack a 10 for price but probably a 3 or 4 for performance.

I acquired my MJ in Feb.2007 and for the price I figured I had gotten pretty good service. Therefore, upon renewal in 2008, I signed up for five years – I now regret I did -. Recently most people I called, complained that my voice was breaking up so badly, that everything I said was absolutely incoherent, although I could hear them clearly. Those without caller ID, just hung up after a couple of hellos. Please note, I am “computer ILLITERATE”, so if you can give me some advice, I would appreciate it in plain language if that is possible.
Thanks in advance.

290. Marie Says:

I don’t believe it’s the product itself that’s the problem (other than bad customer service). I purchased my MJ 6mos ago. So did my brother and sister. My sister and I both use Clearwire (or should I say ClearLiar) … my brother is on DSL. He doesn’t have any problems. My sis and I do. Voice quality is terrible. MJ to Cell phone is terrible, but MJ to MJ is perfect. I did all of the MJ troubleshooting then turned to my ISP (ClearLiar) – it was then I realized that the 1.5mbps was dropping to approx 0.50mbps download (which is important since this is a voice over internet service). I researched further and realized that most ISP’s are offering VOIP services and are intentionally blocking VOIP services other than their own (which are much more than $20/year). Greedy bastages!

On the computer end, I can offer some tips that work well:
- Plug the MJ directly into a working USB and directly to the computer (not into a docking station – I was using the HP laptop dock and wasn’t getting the necessary power.
- Purchase a phone extension chord (approx 1 to 2 feet) and place between the MJ and Phone. Keep the phone (most likely portable) a good 1 to 2 foot distance from the MJ itself to reduce interference).
- Get a line filter and attach directly to the phone. Should be Computer – MJ – Extension – Filter – Phone (with the phone base being a good distance from the computer/mj).
- Reboot your system at least once a week (nice hard boot) and remove the MJ from USB for at least 1 minute (static builds drastically).

It seems like a lot of additional steps, but for $20/year it’s a worthy investment of $10 in parts and 10 minutes in labor.

Our problem is simply with the ISP – Yes, that’s CLEARWIRE (CLEARLIAR). Even though we are stuck in the service for another year, we are getting DSL. I have and will continue to use their online customer support as many times a day until Clear get’s so sick of us that they just remove the VOIP block and give us the speed they promised when we signed up for their crappy service.

Good luck all~

After a year of struggling with this I was told that I would have to pay for a new unit to be sent out. I believed this to be unethical to expect me to pay again for a unit that never worked right in the first place so I said “don’t bill me for this year and I will cancel the service. I was told the billing did not go through yet so no problem, it would be taken care of but I was billed. I recontacted chat and was told the billing problem would be taken care of and an email sent out confirming but again this was not done and the bill remains on my card. I need this resolved now!

Xander: Hi! Mike
Xander: Please hold on while I read your previous chat sessions.
Xander: You were only charge of $19.95
Xander: Dated 09/10/2009
Mike: Yes that is the charge that was not suppose to have gone through since my mj did not work and I told your company that I was not going to pay for something again that didn’t work in the first place
Xander: It cannot be gone, Mike. You purchased it.
Xander: May I know what is the problem of your magicjack?
Xander: I have not heard from you in a while. Do you wish to continue this chat session?
Mike: I don’t want to go through all of that again, if you want to know just read the hours of previous chats and it will answer that, needless to say it does not work and never did work right and on the day of my renewal I was told that I was sent a bad unit and needed to pay to have a new one sent out. I said that I was not going to pay a second time for something that never worked right in the first place and that is when I said to cancel my renewal. I was told that would be ok since the credit card was not billed yet. I trusted that this was the case otherwise I would have called my credit card company and blocked the billing
Xander: You purchased the renewal plan last 09, 10, 2009
Xander: You are charge automatically for it.
Mike: Yes and that is also the day that I canceled it when I was told my MJ device was disfunctional
Xander: Is your magicjack plugged in right now?
Mike: no
Xander: Can you plug it in?
Mike: everything was deleted on 09, 10, 2009
Xander: The magicjak will install itself automatically when plugged in.
Mike: when I was told my service was being canceled
Mike: I do not want MJ or to spend the time proving to you that it does not work. READ PREVIOUS CHATS if you want that info.
Mike: yes or no Are you going to reverse the charge to my credit card per previous agreement with previous chat agents.
Xander: Your magicjack service is not cancelled here, Mike
Xander: That cannot be reverse, Mike
Mike: Yes it can…so you are telling me no, magicjack is not honoring it’s previous commitments to me. Is that correct?
Xander: The days already started for your 2nd year plan
Xander: It cannot be reverse.
Mike: That is because of the failure of your staff to fulfill it’s promise to not bill, and then later on the promise that the billing would be reversed. Now the final statement is no we are not going to do what we previously committed to. I understand your adversion to answer this very simple issue, but since I have a record of these previous chats I know that a court of law will hold your company liable for commitments made by your agents to it’s customers.
Xander: When you purchase the renewal plan you are given 24 hours to cancel it
Mike: I realize that and I canceled it within two to three hours and your company ignored my cancelation per the chat session for that day.
Xander: No, Mike, I checked all you records and your last chat was Sept. 11, 2009
Xander: Which is two days after you purchased the renewal plan
Mike: When then someone deleted the sessions for that day then but I have my records.
Xander: Records here cannot be deleted, Mike
Mike: This is my last statement. I will publish my chat at as many places I can on the internet seeking others with similar experiences with your company as I know from what I read in the past there are many. For those who respond I will seek to organize a class action suit against MJ. Since work is slow at this time I have the time to do this. Hopefully a few of us can put a stop to this kind of abuse with at least one more unethical company.
Xander: Okay. It is up to you. We do respect.
Xander: Is there anything else I may help you with today?
Xander: I have not heard from you in a while. Do you wish to continue this chat session?
Xander: Since I have not heard from you for some time, I am going to close this chat. If you need any help in the future, please do not hesitate to chat with us again. Good bye

Look people magic jack is very cheap.I use it as a backup phone because i have a cellphone.Ive had no problems with magic jack. The problem is alot of people dont realize how to use it.If your internet service dont have a good upload speed, you will have alot of these problems.I had a wireless card through cricket once,i had problems talking on the phone people could not here from the other side, phone would go straight to voice mail.So i got timewarner highspeed internet,All of my problems were sloved.Look people its only about 19.95 a year.Get better internet service and a better computer and read the instructions,I promise you want have this problem anymore!!!!!!

295. Linda Says:

I downloaded updates and Magicjack then asked for my E-Mail and password. Magicjack will not accept anything I enter. When I say I forgot my info, it asks for my E-Mail to let me know what my info is. I enter my E-Mail and it replies that it don’t recognize it and to enter the E-Mail that I registered with. What kind of run-around is this?

296. Jared Says:

I had problems with MJ disconnecitng phone calls. MJ customer support only told me to recycle the power and MJ unit in different ways. They were useless and started to block my requests for help. The problem ended up being my broadband provider. I had to use the term “network congestion” for them to put me on a new port in their CO. If MJ would have steered me in that direction, a lot of frustration would have been avoided.

Now, MJ says my registration has ended after 12 months of my 60 month purchase. MJ does not recognize my email as an active account. This is breach of contract!!

Did you know VoIP services require a minimun of 300kb in upload to work? MJ does not tell us this.

297. uscentaur Says:

my incoming calls are not properly idied. the numbers that appear on my computer screen are not those of the callers.
My magic jack worked magically well for the first two months until a week ago, when i started having trouble identifying incoming calls. How can i solve this problem ? Please help.

298. Domina Says:

most of the problems i hav when using MJ are due to my crappy qwest dsl, so i wont complain til i hav better dsl.
my BIG problem is that i do not hav any sound from my external USB Notebook Speakers when MJ is installed.. since the builtin laptop speakers are crappy, i need an external sound source.
i contacted an expert, and this is what he determined: “Nothing wrong with your USB ports. MagicJack has changed your audio and driver settings so it can use the sound system for phone calls. The changes exist whether the Jack device in plugged in or not.
You can confirm the problem by uninstalling MagicJack and reinstalling your sound drivers. Should fix the problem.
You’ll probably need to contact the maker of the MagicJack device for a workaround.”
theres the problem: contacting MJ for anything!!
so now i havta uninstall MJ evrytime i wanna listen to music or conference on my laptop, and reinstall evrytime i need to use the phone :(
could it be any more inconvenient?
if someone has a solution, PLEASE post it! Thanx, and GoodLuck to evryone here!

Frequently when people call us, they claim that they are getting a crackling sound. In other words, our transmission (voice) goes in and out. I have tried putting it into the different ports on the front of my computer. I have two.

I even went to Radio Shack and purchased a new phone thinking that the problem was with my old phone. However, the pro blem comtinues. I would appreciate a live call to talk about this.

302. RS Says:

Hi Guys,

I didn’t read all of the VERY lengthy chat log posts and other complaints here about MagicJack, but thought I would pass along this info I received a few months back.

We’ve had a MagicJack as our primary phone now for about a year, and the call quality is very good. We also have 21mbps Comcast Internet service to power it. Our MagicJack is connected to my old desktop computer, which is only used to run business-oriented applications. When we first got it, there were a few problems, but they were all solved with a few simple and understandable remedies. Here’s the scoop, and what they don’t tell you in the ads:

1) Don’t run your MagicJack on a gaming or entertainment-based computer that is going to be running memory hogging applications. Also, don’t run 15 Internet Explorer windows, listen to a CD, and Mail Merge your Access database when your trying to use MagicJack. When your RAM gets very low and/or your CPU is maxed out, MagicJack will start dropping your calls, the sound quality will degrade, and generally the device will not work properly. Obviously you should expect this with any VOIP product.

2) Make sure your power saving settings are not turning off the USB device that is running your MagicJack. This happened to us, and applies to those of you using MagicJack with external USB hubs.

3) Some phone numbers will not work with MagicJack, so keep a back up phone handy. This means that when you call certain numbers, you’ll get a disconnected recording or a fast busy signal. The reason for this is that some telephone and Internet companies are deliberately blocking MagicJack from accessing their networks. I discovered this when I tried to call a Sears store, and all of their numbers were busy. When I call the same numbers with my cell phone, they go right through. MagicJack is aware of this problem, and is trying to develop workarounds, but they’ve got a lot of big companies working against them. There is currently legislation in Congress that would fix this situation, but I don’t know the status. Just don’t jump all over MagicJack for this, because it isn’t their fault.

That’s basically it. It works great almost all of the time if you’re on a normal computer that is not overly taxed by CPU or RAM heavy applications. There are a few kinks here and there, but overall I’ll give it a 9 out of 10 for a relatively new product that is almost free, and saves you thousands of dollars a year if you make very many long distance calls.

No, I have absolutely no connection to the company or their personnel whatsoever.

303. RS Says:

Oops, forgot to mention that you should also have cable Internet or high speed DSL to get the best sound quality. MagicJack has recently improved their gadget by giving it a DSL button, but it works MUCH better with cable. If you’re on 756k DSL, you’re probably not going to get very good results.

304. chas Says:

Magic Jack keeps cutting out after being on the call for a short time (1 minute some times). Each time when I contact MJ on-line help, they offer suggestions like plug the unit into a different USB port, reboot your computer, none of which fixes this issue. It keeps happening.

This all started about 6 months ago.

Ideas?

I have heard MJ has grown to big and can no longer handle the volume of calls now.

305. RS Says:

I have had magic jack for about 6 months and it workd fine a few time. However, for the last 10 times I have tried to use it, the party i am calling cannot hear me during the call though I can hear them. I tried all possible config via control panned (sound, voice, etc9 and even spent a good amount of time CHATTING with customer rep but no success.

ANY IDEAS ?

306. Roberto Says:

I spent hours today online with the help desk. No go. They implemented something new that makes the sound of the call “jumpy” and people can’t understand me or viceversa.
Cheap price=cheap quality. They should be able to reverse the “upgrades” made.
Silly of me to use MajicJack for work. Losing customers…

307. Lee Russ Says:

DROP CALLS, I was on Magicjack chat for 12 hours with no help about my Magicjack dropping calls. It was only 8 months old.

Dear Magic Jack helpdesk,
I am a very happu user of magic Jack !. I do receive calls quite well and clear but I noticed that sometimes during a calll it does block me out and I can’t follw the conversation withour asking over and over to repeat. I allways appologize for staic and people do undrstand. Same is for the quality with people. There is a amount of static in the line and sometimes also these block-outs. I also use Skype and this line on the same computer is very clear and no block outs.
Is there a solution for magic Jack or does Skype use a different technology?
Please advise.
Looking forward to a solution !

312. Sharee Thornberry Says:

If you get the message about usb drive: Unplug magicJack. Uninstall the software. Plug magicJack back in. In “Computer” folder where the drives are listed, there should be 2 drives added for magicJack. One should say PHONE and one should say magicJack. If not, right click on each of the 2 new drives to find one of them says “format” in the dropdown list. Click format. Go to the magicJack website to reinstall the software (it will say upgrade) and everything should work. You can also get instructions from the level 2 tech in the live chat section. This is the same fix if you find you can’t run a dvd without magicJack closing. The phone drive probably says cd/magicJack for one of the drives. By following the above instructions, the drive is changed from a cd drive to the phone drive.

I just got MajicJack week before last and people tells me the calls drop and breaks up just like Vonage did after six months. It sols for 19.99 and not 39.99 for a year and i paid 1.00 for the first year in case a dog or something like that gets hold of it, i was just wondering if they also mean if it quits also? Also if i ever get a hold of my cousin in GA next to Fla and he tells me he can’t hear me i’m going to do more than return it, i’m doing some reporting to some people from the State here and the BBB and see what they will do cause it’s hard to do without a phone and no matter the cost, if you call someone or they call you that you want to hear and be heard good, True or not? I’m still in college and taking Law and i know a lot of lawyers and judges in a few states that would just love to hand a lot of phone scammers. You can download MediaRing for free and i have tried that and it works good on both ends but you have to have a headset and mind won’t fix right on my head but if you download that and have a set then try it cause it’s free and all you have to do is a free signup and you can make long distance calls also.

318. Hassan Jamil Says:

After plugging in the magicjack USB into my laptop, the software does not launch. It used to work perfectly fine couple of weeks back but since then its giving the same problem of the software not loading even when I click on it multiple times. Please help. Thanks

319. Don Heath Says:

I let my magicjack service expire because of recurring problems which were only helped temporarily if at all by the constant upgrades and time consuming sessions with ‘technical help” chat ’service’. I tried a number of high quality telephones with the magicjack and tried all of the suggested ‘fixes’ from the chat line (so many of them over and over again). Perhaps the problem does stem from software changes in my computer (God knows I’m not very computer savvy) but the commercials and informercials (so many of them) all say that the magicjack works with all computers and any phone. If they are going to claim that it works with all computers and any phone, then it should. If the problem arises from unintentional changes to the customer’s software, the magicjack should be designed to adapt to these changes. As I understand it, these changes occur all the time without the user even being aware of them. No matter how low the price is, the thing should work as advertised. Ultimately, it’s just not worth the hassle. Good bye magicjack.

320. David Doran Says:

I think Magic Jack is a great item but they definately have some growing pains. They need to have a “contact” link where their users can not only complain but offer some good suggestions that might make them better. My MJ went off on Friday, live chat was great and got it back working but was not able to tell me why the problem. Then an hour later it was off again and spent well ove an hour with chat while they ask me to go through specific computeer settings and for someone that is not computeer savy, this is not easy and do not remember having to do this when I first got it. After a long communication time it was working again but I specically ask the agen to tell me what all this computer information was for, why I needed to do that and why the MJ failed; they did not answer and those answers could have been a great aid to me for the future. Not knowing took the “value” away from MJ, they present it to end users as…..buy it, try it, plug it in, down load and your done. Have it fail and not knowing what caused the failure lis far from the value they present. I later heard that ones computer that could have had a site issue might affect MJ. If this is so, then that is what their tech people should have told me so I can do what I need to do to make sure stuff like that does not happen. That being said I ask them to send me return instructions just in case this occurs again…….value then goes out the window and there is no sense in keeping it. They did provide the information and wojld have liked to communicate my thoughts with MJ direct. Companies need to learn that even though customers can “complain”, they also can offer good information that will allow them to be better at what they do.

321. Joseph Says:

The Only Real Problem I have Noticed Is That When Talking During A Call, It Is Very “Choppy”. Like 1-2 Second Delays During The Conversation. Is There Any Fixes For This Small Inconvience.

322. Len Says:

I have a MJ with a US area code having been promised that I could change the number once at no charge and that Canadian area codes would become available “soon”. The website now shows several Canadian area codes but I am now told I can’t make the change. Cdn codes are apparently available only to new customers – let the old ones hang out to dry. I am also told that even if I bought a new MJ, a Cdn area code would command an additional annual fee of $10.
then when I contacted a rep yesterday, I was told that engineers “are currently working” on making the switch to Cdn area codes possible on the website.
What is the true state of affairs with respect to switching to a Toronto (416 or 647) area code?

323. Skip Says:

I’ve had my MagicJack for a few months now…

The only problem I’ve had is getting the ‘Max Headroom” – “MIX Master” effect..

This happens when their are other memory and process hogging applications competing for resources and winning over the MagicJack…

When I receive calls it’s difficult to control how much ongoing processing is occurring and have to scramble to close browsers and such.

I’m attempting a solution.

In the Task Manager I’ve raised the priority of the process to HIGH… I’m waiting to see if that does the trick.

Will keep you posted…

For $19.95/yr —- Yes it is worth this inconvenience . ( kept my landline in the meantime )

324. John Says:

This device is absolutely useless. I have done everything the techs have suggested and the device refuses to operate properly. I’m an attorney and my next move will be a class action lawsuit on behalf of those who have had similar experiences. The exemptions mentioned in the company’s “we are irresponsible and there’s nothing you can do about it” do NOT apply in my state. Class action lawsuits always cost a FORTUNE to defend against and “MJ” has no clue how persistent my firm is.

325. Jacqui Says:

I registered my magic jack and I thought I can also make international calls for free. Now a window popped-up asking me to purchase a plan for international calls…. if this is the case I might as well buy the phone cards and I don’t have to pay $19.99 per year. The only reason I bought the magic jack was to make unlimited international calls as stated on your ads….

326. Colette Says:

I’ve been using MJ for about 6 months now and am reasonably satisfied. Some glitches, but nothing too outrageous.

I have just replaced my original phone with a better model and now the phone won’t ring. The soft phone box pops up so it’s not too bad if I’m sitting at the computer, but this definitely will not do long term. Broke down and contacted MJ support and they said I need an AC powered USB hub, then the phone will ring. Before I spend the $$ for the AC powered hub, just wanted to see if anyone has experienced this and whether it will really solve the problem. Many thanks for any help you can provide!

327. Steven Says:

my magicjack hasnt worked since i purchased it, i can hear the other person and they cant hear me or the other way around. I have tried several attempts to get help from customer service from live chat and no change. I think its insane for a phone service to not have a phone number to contact for help. Last time I tried to get chat support, the instructions they gave me shut down my internet. I am now trying to return it but I purchased it through radioshack and since its been over 30days, i cannot get a refund.

I found from your directions that the total power used from usb hubs is 500. Of 5 hubs, only one uses the 500. The others are self powered. What I would like to knowis, is 500 too much and what does self powered mean to me and my Jack. I am now having real problems with incoming calls. Spent 5 hours online with their tech people. They tried everything they could think of and ended up telling me to get a shorter cord. Mine is probably 15 feet long. I tried an 8 foot one but they said 6 feet or less. Well, I can call out and calling in persons can leave a message on VM. Yes I expected this could happen for the price. But I am disapointed because it worked fine for about 3 months.

333. john46227 Says:

I have had little problems with Magic Jack. When I get an incoming call the phone rings with one continuous ring, and when I pick up the receiver the ringing continues in the earpiece. Also, it’s a bit inconvenient to always dial the area code whenever I make a local call. I hope they find a way around that. Oh, finally I have had my phone hang up on me in the middle of a conversation.

Would hear 3 out of 4 words. kept getting worse, to were 3 of 4 words were dropped. Had no problem hearing the person called. Worked with MJ for about an hour trying to correct the problem. up and down load speeds were great (cable). Asked if could get another unit and was told since I had already received one replacement, they could not send another. At that point told them to cancel my service.

338. Biz Says:

I see here I’m not the only one who has developed a “undying love” for magic jack. The tech support they offer would probably be greatly improved if they used brain damaged, drunken monkeys, who are the result of a faild brain surgery experment.

While I haven’t read each one here, I havent seen any mention of the 6:28 second shutdown on MANY calls. Also no mention how they fix that… by trashing your stored phone numbers reformatting your/their drive.

It wipes out EVERYTHING and you’re not warned first nor given time to save any numbers either. They just drop it on you and let you find out what they did after it’s done.

Now I’ve got to see if I can FIND out why the USB won’t accept the magic jack in my BRAND NEW COMPUTER.

339. B.Pool Says:

I have used MJ for allmost a year and at first it worked well. When, I bought a new computer, it started getting flaky. I performed all of the fixes during the next few weeks and now it doesn’t work at all. Tech support SUCKS…there is just no better way to put it. This product would qualify as a BETA offering but needs a lot of work and a lot more technical help in the on-line area. When the year is over, I will just chaulk it off to experience and get over the anger/frustration.

340. Quinton Says:

When I purchase magic jack, I thought I could use it even I left my computer unattended. When I reenter my site, magic jack reboot. What happen if I need ‘911.’? This system is not what I thought it would be!!!

What can I do to use this system like a regular or cell phone?

342. Gayle Says:

Forgive me if this question shows up twice but when I posted before it died in the middle of the submit.

Have any of you had your contact list disappear? My MJ still works but my contact list disappeared yesterday and now I can’t even rebuild it because the add button is grayed out along with the edit, delete, and some other option.

Yesterday my compute had some sort of glitch. My MJ was plugged in but I was not on a call at the time. But I did have to turn off my computer and then start it up again. After that, my contacts wouldn’t load.

I found a file called “AddressBook.xml” on a drive called “magicJack (M:)”. There is another drive called “CD Drive (L:) magicJack” but it doesn’t have a file like that. I opened the xml file and my contacts are all there so I don’t know what’s going in — mainly because I don’t know how those two drives or the files on them are used by the gizmo.

And by the way, does anyone know where those two drives are located? Are they on the MJ gizmo itself of are they somehow located on my hard drive?

Would really appreciate help if any of you have lost your contact list and recovered it to where it all works properly. Thanks.

344. Mark Greenspun Says:

I have audio cutout problems with Magic Jack..
Chatted with 7 of their technicans for 5 hours of multiple fixes. Not one of their fixes does anything to clear up my cutting out audio problem. WE have tried 16 different fixes with them but still have problems. So I bought a new computer, installed 3gig high speed internet, bought a new magic jack, SAME PROBLEM… I only hear about half of any conversation and visa-versa for the listener. Half the time the phone will not hang up so callers get a busy signal. It is just the worst computing problem I have ever encountered. After they fix my magic jack, if they can, i am taking them to small claims court to re-coup the last 3 days of my life trying desperately to get a working Magic Jack. Anyone else experiencing this cutout problem with conversations on Magic Jack?

345. Doug Says:

Just wanted to share this. If you are trying to call out on MJ, be sure to dial the area code first. I can call the MJ # without dialing the area code, but I have to dial the area code to call out. Do not dial 1 first, just the area code & number.

346. Charlie Jewett Says:

If you want GOOD phone service, INEXPENSIVE, and including LONG DISTANCE, try Vonage. I have had Vonage for over 5 years and it is flawless! I tried MJ but like so many others, it was simply not reliable enough to allow me to cancel Vonage. I did the upgrades, tried the “chat” and looked in vain for a REAL customer service, but nothing helped. Fortunately I gave it a good testing before even considering any other changes. Now my unused MJ is around here somewhere, not connected. The Vonage device sits there and runs, day after day, month after month, without a glitch. GOOD RIDDANCE to MagicJunk!

347. Dan Grimes Says:

I was having some problems with my majik jack cutting out after being on the phone for a couple of minutes or so. Then, I noticed this 3 inch cord that came in the package with the magik jack (an extension cord for it). I plugged the extension cord into my computer and then the magik jack into the extension. Now, it works perfectly. I’m assuming the jack is far enough away from the spinning fans or other interference that previously were causing the malfunction.

348. KACHINA321 Says:

SO THE BIG QUESTION IS DOES THE NAGICK JACK DO WHAT THEY SAY IT DOES? OR IS MAGIC JACK JUST MAGIC JUNK? SHOULD I GO WITH IT OR SHOULD I GO WITH VONAGE?
I AM TIRED OF BUYING THINGS THAT SAY THEY DO THIS AND THAT BUT WHEN YOU GET THEM HOME THEY GO INTO MY JUNK DRAW. I AM SURE YOU ALL HAVE JUNK DRAWS. IS YOUR NAGIC JACK IN YOUR DRAW?

349. Raymond Says:

I’m having problems using it too! It also appears error 3 and I have tried the followings but none works:
1. unplug the phone and plug it back after a while.
2. using command prompt to forward my router ports
3. dowloaded and installed the “upgrade.exe” from the official site.
4. reboot my modem and router

what else would you suggest? Any guess is fine as long as i can get it working for my girlfriend by trial and error.

please I really need help with this.. so worrying that i am paying 5 yrs extension but get no service at all for my girlfriend..

350. joe ortega Says:

would like my money back. Infomertial said i had a 30 day trial with no charge well i got charged want my money back u lying sack of S- – - !!!! 559-772-7796

351. Kim Says:

This thing is a serious piece of SHIT – I’ve been on the online chat for the last 5 days with over 12 hours of logged CRAP with them trying all sorts of crap with my computer (wondering what they have now screwed up). NO resolution – keep getting an error message (EVERY HOUR) ‘Job cannot run because of not original destintaion’. How tough is it to admit that the device is FAULTY and either send me an new one or GIVE ME MY FRIGGIN MONEY BACK!!!

352. Mike Says:

i unplugged my magicjack while it was updating now it won’t load. I cannot make any calls and contacts are not loading

353. jerry g. Says:

I was just about to cancel my Vonage and switch to magicjack until I read this page and all the problems people had, especially with customer support. Vonage customer support has been fine and has worked fine. I live in Argentina and use it to call my family in usa. They almost never call me, hehehe, so I thought magicjack would be ok to make the call to their land line. i pay $23 a month for vonage and have trouble always having the money moved from here to my usa acct. so again, paying once would be easier plus id save a lot of money for a phone where people dont really call me.

What do you think people? Should i go ahead and order magicjack?

354. jlv Says:

I have a nephew who is in another country. Do I need to install and program a number on my computer and then send him the jack or can i send him the package and he program it oversees? I bought a magic jack and have not been able to install it. Nothing has worked so far. Any advice?

355. Brian Says:

My magicjack worked fine before but now its telling me to connect to the internet..I’m connected any advice?

356. J Says:

Ok so heres my problem. I make one call after booting the app up, and it works fine. Then, when I try to make a call after that, or if someone calls me, an error shows up on the magicjack. Stating ; The instruction at “0X000020ed” could not be read. Click ok to terminate the program. Click cancel to debug. – Tried clicking debug, but same issue arose.
Halp?

357. Randy Says:

I just ordered a NIB MagicJack off Ebay for $30. I figure if it defrays our long distance bill for 3 months of so, it’s paid for itself. If not, well, we’ll see how it goes. I would like to comment about the use of an external USB powered hub. I’d highly recommend using one, as part of the troubleshooting process. If you don’t have one perhaps you could temporarily borrow one from a friend/neighbor/coworker. USB PC buses are limited to a total of 500 milliamps. To save a few pennies, many motherboard manufacturers use a single bus for all their USB ports. The more USB devices (keyboard, mouse, flash/external drive, etc.) you have plugged in the less power available to Magicjack. I’m not sure how much power Magicjack draws, but using an external AC powered Hub with nothing but the Magicjack device will ensure it has access to the full 500ma. I’ve had intermittent issues with other USB devices that have disappeared with the use of an external powered hub. Good luck to all.

My magic jack is totally not working. I have spent close to 6 hours with 7 different agents unsuccessfully. They will not refund my fee I paid for 5 years in advance a few months ago. I refuse to spend anymore time, not worth the $50 dollars or so. When I would get on with a new agent they would ask the same questions. Occasionally they would take the time to read my history (usually having me on hold for some time). I often went thru the same drills over and over. I plan to write to CONSUMERS REPORT with my experience. I recommend all of those who have complained do the same.

i once had a problem with my magic jack. it said something about an error. So i couldn’t use it. I googled the error and found a solution. All i had to do was reformat the magic jack and to also change it from FAT to NTFS. and so now it works

363. Rick tech Says:

When I left on Wed, I deleted all calls on the magic jack and today when I was there, I see where on Wed and Turs at 8:36PM there was a call and again a minute later and again two minutes later. It also happened the same time and sequence on Thurs.

364. Carlyle Howe Says:

Our magicJack worked fine the first 2 weeks but quite suddenly today it would not work. Just showed “No link to base. Move closer to base, try again.” I tried to locate a Customer Service rep. There is no such thing. I finally changed the phones to an old GE and now the magicJack works. Will try an AC Power USB hub (whatever that is). The other phones have all our speed dial numbers so I’d like to continue using them. Am most disappointed with their Customer Service which, apparently, does not exist. They have a good product but the personnel are not backing it up which makes it not such a good product. I’m still willing to try it because it does save money. Thanks to all of you for the hints I got from the complaints and possible solutions listed herein.

365. Dale Gifford Says:

I bought a magic jack and paid for five years. They turned it off after one year. What do I do to get this fixed. Please advise me.

366. gnb Says:

About Magicjack..Okey apparently no customer service grr..how can I talk to someone to help me if I can’t get connected..Disadvantage you have to turn your computer on , advantage you save money internation/nationwide call..I hope its true because I haven’t tried yet..:))…
I need for feedback about this equiptment its too late :) )…

367. SUE Says:

I AM STARTING TO HATE MAGICJACK!!!
It always cuts out when I am speaking and suddenly the person on the phone can’t hear me.

Then when I want to dial out the dial tone buttons just keep on clicking and I can’t get throught

Then there is ALWAYS STATIC on the phone

WHAT THE HELL IS THIS? This is supposed to be so fabulous but its awful

ALso, when I try and log on to get the magicjack dial pad on my screen, it JUST DOESN”T COME ON!!!

I really want to get rid of this dumb thing but I like the fact that I don’t have to pay for aphone….SO DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY SUGGESTIONS??

thanks
Sue

368. Albert Harris Says:

May I suggest instead of Magic Jack that you use SKYPE. Skype to skype calls are free, the software is free as well. And if you want to call unlimited to the USA and Canada, then get their subscription for around $2.90 per month, that is approx 133.00 pesos per month.

And if you don’t have a credit card, then no problem. Skype has a deal with Western Union, you can just send them the money via Western Union and your service begins immediately.

The service is great and the voice (VOIP) is really clear. Skype is used by many corporations for their employees and even Opra uses it on her show. But, let me caution you, in order for Skype to work efficiently, you must have a very good internet provider. VOIP is only as good as the internet service you use. But fortunately for Skype, they use only a small bandwidth in order for their services to work.

And if you want a virtual USA telephone number to have people call you on, then that is about 15.00 usd for three months. Its really a great deal. Check it out!

Good luck to you…..

Albert

369. Ronna Says:

I am attempting to use my magicjack for the first time. I have loaded everything, but when I call someone, the person on the other end cannot hear me. I can hear them, but they cannot hear me. I checked the settings and they appear to be correct. I went to MagicJack’s help, but none of the responses were adequate. How can I fix this issue?

Anyone know how to fix it? Ronna

370. Ron Says:

I have had MJ for over a year, connected to an 11 yr old HP desktop. Yes, it has a few glitches, just like your cell phone, cable connections, Internet Explorer, web pages not downloading, slow connections, losing satellite service, etc…….so did you throw out your cell phone, TV, computer, cable company, land line phone, etc???? No, you resolved it. My MJ is successful 95% of the time……that’s better performance than either my computer or cell phones. If someone calls and I don’t get a response, I go in to the soft phone on my screen and call them back…..works great every time that has happened, which is seldom. If it loses a connection, like cell phones do, I call them back , just like I do when the cell drops a call. I make sure all of my auto-scans and downloads are mid-morning….3 am, for example. I do believe that is most of MJ’s issues…..internet interference….just like cell phone drops. Most all issues can be solved by using the customer service MJ web link. If you are having issues, simply reboot MJ by unplugging and replugging the jack. So, in a nutshell, for $20 / year, with unlimited long distance, cheap international calling, call-waiting, forwarding, messaging, ID, I am ecstatic…..vs $47 for cell, $50 for land line PER MONTH!!

371. Doyle stigall Says:

After reading all about MAGICJACK on the inter net I dont want your magicjack. The thing that I dont like most of all is that you dont gove out your E_MAIL address or a phone numbet to MAGICJACK its like your trying to hide something

372. GOT2KNOW Says:

still trying to find anyone that understands this majic jack….because their chat people know about as much as i don’t….i’ve had for going into second year, as i stopped using for some time…re-purchased my new year, tried again with different location, verizon high speed, and still i get this:….i dial out, i start to hear skipping, they pick up, and the chopping, skipping in their voices are unbelievable for today’s technology….i ask if they can hear me clearly and they can…..i bought a multi usb gadget, plugged the jack into that, not much better, and if it is, it’s just a fluke..i tried jiggling the usb the wires, etc, same thing, and off on clarity to their voices!..i’ve tried running nothing else, (even though they advertise that you can run your emails , shopping etc, in the background, not true either!….and still chops up….my friend said my laptop is not capable of handling it?>…..gave it to someone else, on the same internet system, he plugged it into his old laptop and it worked fine….plugged back into mine,(which at the time was a new one, although the old method, not the dual whatever it’s called…..sorry!….. and the same chopped up voices….mj chat said turn the volume down on the soft phone, that didn’t work, tried everything….had vista at the onset,i think, now have windows 7 for a few months on the same laptop, i updated thru mj and still works like a tin cup method…..i am tech challenged so if you know how to fix this anyone out there, please try to talk in really dumb people’s terms….i only know the basics on computer talk!…..thanks to anyone and everyone that can understand what i even wrote….lol

373. ttlbev Says:

I purcased a MJ & installed it just fine. The problem is, when I try to make a call, it instantly disconects the internet. I get a dial tone but as soon as I start dialing, boom…the internet shuts down. I’m trying to use it on my laptop with a wireless connection. I tested my upload and download speed & it is just fine.I spent quite some time with tech support & installed updates as directed & tried all kinds of things. I was eventually transferred to a “higher level” tech support person. Same thing all over again and eventually got disconnected. I then moved the MJ to a PC with an ethernet connection. I get a dial tone but when I dial, it just keeps a dial tone like I never dialed at all. I get error messages about input/output sound. The phone will ring hooked up to either computer but nobody can hear me & I can’t hear them…laptop disconnects. It appears that I can use a headset & the software dialpad but not an actual telephone. I tried answering a call with the dialpad on my laptop but no sound. Does anyone have any ideas?

374. slnoonan@hotmail.com Says:

Figured out the problem definitively.

XP though Vista had a problem writing to DVD media because of upperfilter and lowerfilter entries under the following registry key: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}]

MagicJack treats one of the drives it creates as a CD-ROM drive and used CDROM.SYS. The upperlimit and lowerlimit vlaues halt the disk manager service from resolving (identifying) the magicjack drive.

Simply delete upperfilters and lowefilters from under the key in the registry, and reboot. MagicJack will work then.

Try it. It works.

Joe

375. rick Says:

Plain and simple……save your money. 1.) Having to dial area code when making local calls. 2.) If there’s noise in your cable line…then there’s noise in your call. 3.) The dropped calls…..I can count them on 7 hands. Having to reload the program every now and then is also fun. A waste of time and money. Trust me.

376. Claire Says:

magicjack is been upgrading for two days, cannot make or receive call..

377. uriel anderson Says:

Can’t make calls from the damn thing. AS far as recieving call i can only get voice messages left on the voice messaging service. No dial tone when i pick up the phone just a dead line why is this. it was workin fine for about 4 months then stopped

378. Tammie Says:

I don’t use the phone very often i don’t know how long it’s been out i cant get it to work now I’m waiting for my daughter to come and see if she can fix it i was going to buy one for my mom and dad that are in there 70s but with this i don’t know about it now

379. Elaine Medina Says:

I am keeping Magic Jack because I am on a limited budget but I have had issues with intermittentcy for some time since I purchased it.I experience mostly cutting out when talking to someone, not getting a dial tone when I start up the phone or some one I am talking with can no longer hear me after a time. What is frustrating is the RCA (root cause analysis). Because multiple issues can be causing the problems I am having- I am attempting to weed through input on this website in an attempt to isolate out and compare my specific problems to others- and yet I cannot esstablish a good plan of action to start with. I am a data analyst by trade so I am somewhat computer friendly. If anyone has had success with solving the same problems I experienced it would be good to get feedback so I can correct using the same course of action. In the meantime the suggestions posted at http://voip2u.org/having-problems-with-magic-jack seem good. Any input is greatly appreciated.

380. Allen Leger Says:

I bought the Magicjack (open package) on ebay. When I tried to use it, it had alresdy been registered. It has to have the email address and a passwrd to work. I can not get any assisitance to change the registration. Anyone who knows how to do this please post a response.
Thanks

384. walid abed Says:

When your magic jack shows a red WARNING on your screen indicating that your MJ is not plugged into your computer’s USB jack (yet it is infact plugged in properly),the fix may be to de-install MJ from your computer’s C:\memory then re-install it anew. You also need to update the software. If you do not know how to do all of this, the MJ on-line help will take you by the hand. They are good when you can get hold of them.

In my humble experience MJ works normally perfect, but hickups do happen with any electronic device. More than often it is a software problem requiring a software solution. But since the majority of us are not software experts (myself included), we get easily frustrated to the point of cursing the product and its manufacturer. I agree that MJ is absolutely missing great business opportunities by not having a live breathing trouble shooter/customer service person at the other end of the line. If they had one, MJ would pose enormous and costly competition to all common carriers. It would sell billions of this magic device world wide. Please HEAR ME Mr. MJ Owner & CEO.

385. jaY Says:

HEY I HAVE A MJ AND FOR THE YEAR I HAD TO REPLACE MY PC POWER SUPPLY 6 TIMES IN 1 YEAR ASK THEM ABOUT IT THEY SAID ITS NOT THEIR PROBLEM

386. David Says:

During the installation for obtaining the MagicJack assigned phone number, although the city of my residence has the highest population in the area code, my city was not listed for me to obtain a local prefix number (the three digits of the phone number right after the area code number). Therefore, I chose another city. Now, if my next door neighbor phones me on my MagicJack number, he has to incur a long distance phone charge!!!
MagicJack’s answer is that there are not available local numbers–although my city has at least 10 local prefix numbers.

387. Phil Says:

Do a Restore back to a date when your computer was working ok.

Uninstall all antivirus programs and Firefox. Use Internet Explorer.

Don’t bother with the online chats; they last for hours and a tech will try to take over your computer using java and wreck everything.

you guys are really scaring me about this magic jack. i just purchased mine and so far so good at first i couldn’t hear it ring but i messed with the settings and everything is working fine good sound and all but, hopefully it won’t mess up my pc.

390. Barbara Says:

I’ve had many problems with my magicjack. I get one problem fixed then another pops up. The newest problem is that when I make a long distance call we get cut off. The person I am calling cant hear me and I end the call by hanging up in utter frustration. I’ve talked with the support people and have done all the things they tell me to do. I think the problem is fixed until I call again! Very frustrating and I’m tired of dealing with it!

391. Mike Says:

I had the now you see it now you you don’t problems and the “usb” not recognizing the gadget. I got rid of avg and replaced it with Microsoft essentials and the problem went away completely.

392. Tracey Says:

Are you suppose to unplug the magic jack after use everyday or leave it plugged?

I left my magic jack plugged into my hardrive and shut down my computer as normal. This morning after I tunred on the computer my phone did not have a dail tone. I clicked the magic jack short cut icon on my desktop and it sent me a warning message to plug in the magic jack. But again, I never unplugged the magic jack once I installed it.

How do you use the magic jack from day to day?

393. rick Says:

Has anyone out there figured out a way to use the magic jack for a fax. It would seem that such a good gadget cannot send or receive a fax

394. Kim Says:

I wish I would’ve read these comments last year. The Magic Jack is the biggest money-sucking joke!
After successfully working for a few months, it suddenly quit. I spent approx. 3 hours with customer service. Likewise, my mom spent 3 hours with customer service. They had us going in to my hard drive making all sorts of customizations. I should’ve ran at that point. In the end, they sent us a new one.
I was told to unplug it once a month but what I’ve found out is it just randomly quits working. I unplug it once a month and it works during that time or doesn’t. It has a mind of its own! I reboot my computer and either it works or it doesn’t. There is no rhyme or reason to the working nature of this product.
It’s paid for the next 8 years I believe (a fault of mine) but as of today, I’m switching back to Vonage. Not that the company cares…they’ve already got my money for the next 8 years!!

Wow ive had my Jack for a bout a month and it likes to call 911 at weird hours in the morning When i got through to their so called live agents they avised to to make up a fake address so the police cant find me. What kind of company would tell you to do this. Anyways it called 911 at like 5 am and im awoken to the police banging on my door. Then was givin a citation and taken to jail for 911 abuse. When i got out i was pissed off and tried and tried to call them so i had get back online and actually got a tech thats said it could be a virus or a bad config. I never had a problem like this before with and broad band phone service. I think they fixed the problem and doing numerous patch links and upgrades and formats on the device. No its stuck on my screen and i cant get it off. They need a lawsuit slapped against them. Dont ever bye one.

How do I change my 911 address, I moved and have a different address.

398. george Says:

Just purchased MJ on line from MJ website. When I tried to connect and activate, I found that the “new” device is already registered to someone else!! So I have his email address and all contacts. Plus I would like to have my own number and device registered to me. Online chat customer service was not able to help. Kept transferring me to “one of our top 10% agents”?!

Have anyone had a problem with there Magic Jack Dialing number in people ear?

My Magic Jack start Dialing Number in people ears back in October 2009. I tried several times to fix the problem. Call, email, etc. they keep on giving me the same on answer. Run the M.J. Fix. dont work. then I brought a new computer and got a replaced magic jack, (Paid for the 1yr Wty.). I end up getting a new number and another 1yr of talk time. and this one is doing the same thing the first one is. so it in there system.

Also, why every 6 months I have to call or email them to fix my Voice mail?

I feel like Magic Jack have went down hill. and they need to take that old ad off of there from 2008.

If you buy one, get a 1 year plan. and dont buy it online. it bull!!!!! Radio Shack is about the best place to buy one.

DEA, great post in 2008…. You fixed my problem. My phone wouldn’t ring until I opened up my Volume Mixer-Device on my PC in Vista and checked Handset instead of Speakers. Now everything works just fine.

412. Pete Says:

I can echo most of the complaints here – dropped calls, very often after a few minutes, voice break-up, echo, one sided audio drop, where only one side can hear the other, but not both ways. When dialing ,no ringtone is heard by caller, yet the receiving end hears the ring. When this happens ,there’s no audio on the caller’s side ,as mentioned above.
Used MJ for a total of 2 years, but after the first year the trouble started -since Jul’09- so for the last year I’ve had nothing but trouble.
Spent hours on chat to resolve the problem, but it’s like the “needle is stuck” at support. They have you repeat the same tests over and over ,never mind that I tell them that this doesn’t resolve it.
Obviously their “script” doesn’t go beyond a few obvious
problems.
My suspicion is that their servers are overloaded ,so hence the dropped calls ,but they won’t admit it.
Since I paid in advance ,I’m stuck with a marginally working piece of crap.
Just in case you wonder -I don’t have any trouble with other VOIP services or IM voice chat, so it’s not my computer or the cable (10 Mb line)

wow, guess I am not he only one who has had problems and very frusterated!! Mine worked fine for a while then nothing but problems. When I first got it it even faxed fine for a few months, then that quit. was told faxes won’t work, but they did.Had many problems and never got them fixed w/ tech support! Now I dial the number sometimes wgoest through, sometimes get 1 like a busy sound and it goes dead, never even dials. anyone else have that prob and how did you fix it? bet I have spent 30-40 hours w/ tech support, that makes this a very pricey phone. would the ac powered usb hub help?
thanks for the help and for letting me know its not just me!!
