Did you fill out the RMA form for your return? magicJack will not refund your money without that unfortunately.

Have you talked with a customer service representative through their online chat? Try that, you can also just return the magicjack (don’t open it) and then dispute the transaction through your credit card company or bank.

Try unplugging the magic jack device, reboot your computer then plug it in again and see if that helps. If not, contact customer service at magicjack.com

I think majic jack is a rip off. I didn’t know I had to keep my computer running to get calls. All I get is static on my phone when I use it, and my charge card has been charged twice.I am going to report them because obviously this is a problem, I am not the only one that got overcharged.

Magic Jack has not EVER worked right and I called their company and they did not know what the problem was. Problem is IT DOES NOT WORK, your phone won’t ring, you will try to dial out and as soon as your number has been dialed you get another dial tone, over and over.
Finally, one day it gave a message, Please connect to the internet… Ha hahaha, I am connected dummy. It has never worked since.
I am filing a BBB complaint. They score and F already . Hope there is a class action lawsuit coming !!!

how long does it take to activate the magic jack? I try to make a phone call but its all snowy not clear what is wrong?

After getting my firewalls set up correctly (you need ports 5060 & 5070 opened) it works great. Good sound quality, even my fax machine works, though that’s not guaranteed.

All the issues I see here are addressed in the Magic Jack web page FAQ section. I had fairly good luck with their web page support chat on an ordering change issue.

As far as I can see they are not a rip-off or scam, though I guess it’s to be expected some people will have trouble. I can now call my son in Poland with a local number, and he can call my home phone even when my computer is off. Can’t beat that for $20 a year.

I also use this for my small office phone so I don’t have to be on the cell all the time.

I ordered two MagicJacks & I paid $106.85US, but I received only one!!

I can make calls just fine on my magic jack. I purchased it from Best buy so no one has my credit card number. The only problem I have had is that I cant recieve calls.

I received the two Magic Jacks I ordered. They were suppose to be $39.95 each and came with a one year subscription. I was charged $217.65! Do the math. There is no “24-7″ service as advertised, there is no direct “chat” as advertised, and there is no customer service number to call. Actually, there is no customer service at all! I’m forced to place a dispute with my credit card company. How ridiculous is this? After reading a lot of other “billing issues” I’m really worried about further charges. I may have to declare my credit card lost in order to prevent any possibility of this happening. Too bad we (the public) are duped into products that are nationally advertised and endorsed by legitimate sources.

Since before Christmas actual since the latest update my Vtech cordless phone stopped dialing, I have been on their “so-called” customer service chat and have been told to buy a new phone but today when again chatting with someone they informed me that in 5-6 hours they will be done updating on their end and that my Vtech phone would start working. I really haven’t had any problems with my magic jack til the newest update, every now and then I might have echo but heck I am spending $20 a year for a phone when if I went thru my phone company and got everything magic jack offers would cost me over $60 month just for the phone not internet that total would be over $100 a month so I am not gripping bout the little things I just want to be able to make calls using my phone not soft pad on computer. So lets hope that this “update” they are doing now will resolve the problems some of us are having making calls using the phone.

Also, I want to add, that they do tell you that the funds will be “Reserved” until the thirty day trial period. If you decide not to keep the Magic Jack they will release the funds back.

I have to say I was terrified to deal with Magic Jack customer service after all the bad reviews, but I just got off a chat with a customer rep and was totally satisfied with the service. He was informed, polite, friendly, and had good English. I am past the return date and didn’t expect to get a refund. I just wanted to cancel my subscription and return the device (which turns out not to be necessary). Maybe they are improving in this department, or I just got lucky. Their site is pretty annoying, though, you have to click a bunch of times to actually start the chat, and if you select any options having to do with returns you are redirected to a “wait, before you return!” type window. Still, not the nightmare I expected.

I have used the Magic jack for 3 wks and have had many issues! Echos,dial tones,not able to make calls,very poor quality of voice,hearing only every 3rd word..no help from “chat lines’ only tell you to disconnect,put into new USB,try a new phone,try the short cable,shut off your computer each day for one hour{then you have no phone service}I will be leaving U.S. in April,I will take the device to Greece and will see if it works there,other than that I’m out $40.00!! i would not recomend this to anyone!!!

I initially had some difficulties with Magic Jack, (i.e., unreliable when answering calls, echoes, etc.) but have since received a new unit; and all the problems have pretty much disappeared.

I dealt with a live customer service rep (IM over internet) and while not top-notch, were still approachable.

The main issue I still have is that every time the computer re-boots with a Windows update, Magic Jack does not always re-boot, so I have to watch it. At any rate, I took the five year plan, and it comes out to about $3 per month for unlimited calling & domestic long distance. Not a bad deal if you think about it.

Is your USB port an external port? If so, is it a/c powered? The USB port needs to be a/c powered if it is an external port.

I ordered this piece of junk and on the next day, 98.00 was taken out of my account and an extra 39.00 for service I did not order.

I just recieved magicjack and cannot register it. It says if you are connected to the internet our registration server is down, so I went to tech chat and they had me run a bunch of applications none worked, and still this morning im getting same thing, but when I pick up my phone I here a dial tone, but cant make calls or get a number until I can figure out why It wont let me register.

You are doing a very nice job.My MJ has only one problem on picking up the phone from cradle the dial tone takes a long time to appear. I have changed many instruments, purchased powered USB ports, Fit the phone directly in computer without the cord. I have tried in various notebooks and computers but the problem remains.
I have a high speed BB internet. But nothing works and for this reason I have started hating MJ. Do you have any solution to the problem. It is very frustrating to wait for the dial tone to appear when you want to make a phone call. Hope to get a reply/suggestion from you. Bye

I purchased the magicjack in Nov. of 2008…have had few problems and most were “learning” experience, mostly I am satisfied.
Only problem I did not get corrected is the beeping(Some say it sounds like someone trying to dial the phone) that others hear on their end when I call them(I cannot hear it on my end)
Doesn’t seem to happen 100% of the time…has anyone else experienced this??
For me I got fed up with asking the phone company to explain the increasing “FEES”(Which they never do) on my landline…my bill kept going up and I was not even making long distance calls…so even though the magicjack isn’t perfect..it sure helps to stretch the budget during these economic woes.

I saw a magic jack advertising for international calling plan for pennies per minute. However, I do not know how to sign up for the international calling plan, which countries are in the plan, what are the rates for calling non-magic jack land lines or cell phone numbers.

Yes, I would recommend trying an a/c powered usb hub. Those seem to solve a lot of problems with the magic jack and they are inexpensive.

Firstly thanks a lot for your invention. It has revolutionalized VoIP. I am myself a VoIP engineer and have worked in the field of Telecommunications for a few years now.

Also, travel a lot and use your device for personal communications. This has really made a lot of different in my connectivity and mobility.

I cannot thank you enough.

I believe I have used your service for around 20months to 2 years. And I signed a 5 year deal at the end of my first year. However, as good as your invention has been, off late I have seen a sharp dive in the service. I guess with the hype magic jack has created, there has been a flood of customers may be a couple of dozens thanks to me. I am guessing you are in the process of upgrading your systems fair enough, I hope you soon fix your audio quality issues. Past few months I have not be able to use the device because of a broken storage error, rest assured a lot of people have seen this already.

Also, if I may I would like to take this opportunity to ask you about your investment strategy and future road map for magicJack. What do you really do with all that money? An investment advice please .

I am guessing some may go back into probably buying a great yatch? Some into real estate? And I am guessing you invest some back in the business. I am sure you have invested into upgrading the systems. However, if I may, I would like to suggest investing some in training the support staff.

I just had the same type of chat session as Ronnie. They dont listen to you, make you do everything that you have done 100 times already and then make it nearly impossible to replace. Magic Jack is a joke to me. I personally hate MJ. Sadly, I have been laid off due to cutbacks and have not been able to find another job, so I am stuck with them for now. As soon as I get back on my feet. MJ is out of here.

My MJ crashes all the time, has poor reception alot, puts people on hold and I cant take them off, or when I dial out it rings 3 times and goes back to a dial tone. Skype was much better for sure. Well, enough ranting.

Let’s be honest–I re-signed for a 5 year renewal license because I LIVE on my computer, use my telephone very infrequently and loathe paying for a service that I seldom use. However, you DO get what you pay for and MagicJack has many, many annoying issues. Chief among these, is its tendency to take over (and generally MESS UP) your configurations after one of its frequent updates. And woe-woe-WOE-be-unto-you if you should need to “rely upon the kindness of (those) Customer ‘Support’ strangers” in MagicJack-neverland (!) It can get…very ugly, very quickly. Not only should you expect to spend a MINIMUM of 30 minutes phone time, even after your call has been escalated to a supervisor; but these supervisory techs are a bit on the arrogant side as they fail to fix your MJ issues. In the end, I find that I repair these glitches myself…just in time for the next Magicjack update (she adds dryly)

I’ve had my majic jack for several months now. It works ok, not great but ok. Sometimes the call quality is so so and other times it works fine. I think it has to do with how much bandwidth is being used as I noticed that during the day the call quality is much better than during evenings when more people are home and probably doing stuff on their computers. The problem could be with a congested cable company network. I’m happy with it as far as it being a cheap alternative. I am out of work right now and can’t afford my Qwest landline anymore so I dropped it. I have to have internet for my online business to make some money so cutting internet service was not an option. Magic jack, while not the best quality phone service, is saving me alot of money right now.

Hi, I wanted to share my magicjack customer service experience with everyone on this site. I was able to make calls with no problem but i found that i couldn’t receive calls. whenever i would call my magicjack phone number, a man named anthony would answer!! i asked him if his number was the same as my assigned number and he said it wasn’t. so somehow my number was forwarding to him…… All in all it took about 2 hours but my issue did end up resolved:

I logged on to the live chat and ended up talking to someone named Reyna. She had me unplug and plug in the magicjack, restart the magic jack, format the magic jack and then upgrade the magic jack. none of this resolved my issue and then we were disconnected. i’m sure you can imagine that at this point i was frustrated. here is a transcript of what happened when i logged back on to the live chat:

this was the most inane customer service experience i have ever had. while i am glad that the issue ended up resolved, i CAN NOT BELIEVE how many times that they had me unplug and plug and run an upgrade…. in the end, having the prefix on my number changed is what did the trick. i hope this helps someone else resolve a similar issue in the future

I purchased a magic jack previously and I liked it except I didn’t have a local number and being in business for 40 years, that didn’t work for us. Can I now get a local number for the 43420 zipcode.

Magic Jack sucks!!!! No support, and you are bombarded with spam.

I bought one of these at Best Buy. I began to install it and got as far as the page that asks you if you want a vanity number, Canadian number or free number. No where did it say anything about transferring your current home number to MagicJack. I also noticed my city (pop. of over 70,000 and largest in the area code) was not listed as an option for my area code. The MJ rep didn’t see a problem with this, didn’t have an explanation for why they didn’t include my city in the drop down menu and wouldn’t hand me off to someone more qualified to answer my questions. He essentially hung up on me. Their customer service leaves A LOT to be desired. This thing sounds like a complete scam and I WILL be reporting them to the BBB for misleading advertising.

Registration seemed to go fine, did the email confirmation thing, and yet the dial screen continues to say ‘please wait’, and then asks me to open my internet (it is open, signal strength excellent) and double click. Goes right back to ‘please wait’. ?????

Well, I solved my initial problem (above) with a simple reboot of the computer. Now the issue is that although I can place and receive calls, and the people on the other end say they can hear me clearly, I cannot hear them. I can hear a dial tone when I pick up the receiver, but once a number is dialed, (same area code or not), there is nothing to be heard. Any ideas?

The two changes that fixed my Magic Jack were:
1) install a powered USB 2 four port expander.
2) don’t use the MJ supplied USB flex cable.

Taking mine back to Walmart tomorrow. Would not connect to the internet and I went through over an hour and two levels of “chat” service on their website. Finally gave up while waiting 15 minutes for the third level of customer service. It’s too bad because we had one that worked ok for about 11 months, then the USB plug broke off. I wish someone would come out with a reliable and inexpensive internet phone service.

MJ has been working well for a month. All of a sudden people calling me on my MJ can hear me, but I cannot hear them. If I call them back on my MJ we hear each other fine. The only thing I did was download and install the MJ Mac update. I am running Mac Osx 10.5.6

For those of you that have been using Magic Jack for a while and are suddenly having problems, just try using it on a different computer. I’m betting that a majority of you will find that it works just fine on a different machine. That’s how I narrowed down my problem.

I received a phone call from a magicjack rep in which my 16 year old daughter answered and tried to take a message.. I suggest a collective suit to put them out of business if they are stealing people’s money. I paid for a five years plan and got disconnected and the end of year 1. Customer service? I get the message that my outbound calling has been suspended for excessive use. Does anyone know what is up with this.

I try to use my MJ for my home office number when working at home. I forward my office number to my MJ number. I can of course receive and make calls. My problem is, that without fail, after 2 or 3 mins my calls will drop without any warning. It has become a joke at the office about my MJ and how my calls are always dropped. I did try MJ customer service and they did give me teh run around and reloaded software a couple times, but to no avail. Just can not rely on the MJ for work related calls.

when I first plugged in magic jack I made a call the audio keep gong out on both ends. SCAM ! magic jack isa scam . When trying to renew subscription they pnly send you an email stating that your order is canceled do to high demand for jacks ( even though you are not ordering a new jack ) and tell you to go to radio shack and buy a new one . customer service will only tell you that your account is ” under review ” and will refuse to tell you what that double talk bull s**t means . Then they tell you it is being looked into and they will get back to soon which of coarse isa not going to happen because they want you to go buy a new 50.00 jack most likely because you did not buy any of the many addons they offered to you every day .
It is a scam to get you to pay for a new jack .

pros : well i had very good service for one year . Clear calls none ever dropped . But then i did not use it very much at all so a person using it for all calls may have different results . If it works all the time like it did for me than even buying a new jack would be 50 for one year of service , not bad or buy 5 years .

Junk! The usb port on this thing was busted the first time I took it out of the package. In order for it to even work, you have to stand on your head, one arm out the window and a finger in your nose. Basically, it doesnt work worth a crap. Its not a promise you can even get it working long enough to hear a dial tone, but if by some freak chance you do, its so choppy you cant understand whats being said. Got it as a gift, so guess what, no returns or exchanges from good old walmart, and god forbid there be a phone where you can call someone for just a little bit a help! crap! i will not recommend it to anyone.

I’m truely shooked to see so many nrgative comments about magicjack…I must admitt that I to have had my share of issues with magicjack ..but no more than I expect with any new technology. Seems like their system is untrusted via Bank security so I had to have it lifted … but system keeps rejecting a known good card.

Like a lot of companies these days, support falls short if it does not fit in the “scripts” they give agents. Tech support via chat has no means to solve billing problems related to their own system.

I purchased my MagicJack from walmart. It will not except any of my e-mail addresses. I have Windows 7 and it won’t work. Im angry at my friend who told me about MJ. It is not worth the hassle of not having a customer service to physically speak with. Some of the problems could be fixed if the company wants to stay in business. Its a win win situation for them, because once people find out MJ is a sham. The company can file bankrupcy and screw the customers.

I’ve read a bunch of the above comments and am thoroughly surprised. My Magic Jack set up the first try and I’ve been using it for almost a year and it works fine. I received a Magic Jack several weeks ago, and just now found time to install it. I also have a new VTECH cordless phone that has to be activated. does the Magic Jack need to be activated also? If it does maybe someone can assiste me in this endeavor. I do not want to get the run-around similar to the above 353 people! Even the upper level service personnel seem to exhite a knack for hot hearing what the question is or asking for continuous repition. I already have my home corless phone plugged into my Magic Jack, and the Jack plugged into my computer. I don’t want to run another phone into my house, so how can we use the existing phone lines to get my cordless phone to work? I live in Area Code 605-682-2000 can this number be assigned to my new phone?

Customer support is non-existant. Make a mistake in ordering a service an you will PAY!. NO REFUNDS, CAN’T CHANGE or Cancel a service. Once ordered, it’s charged and it will NOT be Refunded. Erroneous order for Vanity Number, when I really wanted to Port my existing landline number. Received confirmation email, and it stated to reply within ONE HOUR for any changes or void.
Did that, within 26 minutes, but Vanity Charges are NON refundable…. So the email is a LIE.. YOU LIE MagicJackASS.. Cancelled immediately ! No JackAsses with Magic in my house.

have tried for 2 days to get customer service to send me an activation code/password. it isn’t happening. there is NO tech support available by phone, if you cannot type well or have only basic computer knowledge, the online tech support is worthless ! they sucked me in online by saying i could try it for a month before being charged, i bit but it is a good thing i checked my bank account because i was charged immediately. i would have had overdraft charges if not. every service rep i have spoken with via phone cannot even pronounce my name correctly & has spoken in a condescending manner to me. lesson learned; ANYTHING THAT SOUNDS TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE USUALLY IS ! i would not reccomend this product to anyone & wish i would have done more research before purchasing. now i have to try & get my money back out of them. if you are going to buy it, get it from a retail store so you don’t have to deal with thier customer service to return it !

Originally, I bought Majic Jack in April, 2011. I didn’t activate it because the only internet service available to my area was ‘dial-up’. Now, Frontier has stepped up to DSL, high-speed service, so I’m interested in knowing how to proceed with starting up with Majic Jack. However, all my inquiries are met with more of the usual ‘Promotional’ and ‘Advertizing’ spiels, designed to get my money! Nothing seems to be available for ‘Customer Support’! Perhaps Majic Jack should back off their money-grabbing efforts and focus on “Serving” those of us who have already spent our hard-earned cash….!!??

It appears that from Dec. 24 to now, Dec. 28, the magicjack website has been down. Probably yesterday or today, the magicjack registration server is now down and my line is dead. Interestingly, I still get email messages on voicemail, but the line is not working at all. I assume everyone is having this problem. Please confirm.

Appears problem of no website, etc is the laptop. I went to another laptop and all is well with magicjack (I’ve used it for 3 years with no problems). Now on to diagnosing the laptop.

As far as I know, you can’t set the number of rings in magicjack. According to the MJ FAQ’s, “NOTE: magicJack voicemail is set to 4 (four) rings by default. The ring count may not be changed at this time. To use your own answering machine with your magicJack: Change the settings on your answering machine to pick up after 3 rings… before the magicJack voicemail picks up.”

All I can say is MajicJack has been a pain since the day I installed it. Service would drop out after about 30 minutes on standby and I would have to reboot then and every morning. If you have any way to contact “Customer Service” LOL please tell them to discontinue service to 920-554-7208 ASAP. Thanks I can;t find a customer service number any where !!!
