Phone Number & Area Codes
When you purchase your Magic Jack device, one of the first things you’ll do during installation is to choose an area code for your new phone service. Not all area codes are available, but you can choose from most or all of the major area codes. More area codes will be available in the near future, when you visit the magicjack.com website, there is a page showing which area codes are available and also pending.
For instance, if you live in Nevada, the only area code available for Nevada is 702, which is the area code for Las Vegas. You don’t need to choose a Nevada area code though, you could use any one, even New York!
Currently you cannot use your existing phone number for your Magic Jack phone service, but in the coming months, you will be able to transfer your phone number for a nominal fee.
You do not have to give up your home telephone number if you use this new voip phone service. It will give you an additional line, or. you can cancel your land line telephone service if you wish. If you move, you will be able to take your existing Magic Jack phone number with you.
No need to request that your new phone number be unlisted. Your Magic Jack phone number will not be listed in any directory, nor will anyone be able to get your telephone number through 411, or directory assistance.
You will not have to dial any extra phone numbers to call. If you’re calling long distance, just dial the normal 10 digit number for the phone you are calling. For local calls, you may also have to dial a 10 digit number if your Magic Jack phone number is in a different area code than the one you are calling. But who cares, right? All local and long distance calling is free!
There is no extra charge for your Magic Jack phone number. This phone number includes free local and long distance calling to the United States and Canada, free caller ID, free Call Waiting, free Voice Mail and free directory assistance.

itès crap i canèt get this thing registered says server down itès been 3 days of trying and itès so easy they said B.S.
June 9th, 2008 at 12:55 pm
I’ve noticed that either the server, or maybe it’s my magic jack or even my computer…but my magic jack isn’t staying “connected”. It usually just takes fiddling with it for a few minutes to get it going again but what a pain. I’ve got tons of other stuff to do rather than mess around trying to get it going again…

the magic jack has real problems. Don’t count on it to work like they say. If you try to travel with it you will be very frustrated. Don’t bother!
June 22nd, 2008 at 2:17 am
I ordered via the slick infomercial with the used car salesman. I called the toll free number and went through the Automated prompts and even requested priority shipping. Never received a confirmation e-mail as stated and interesting I had a nominal fee charged to my credit card immediately. I contacted live chat and dealt with two people and was advised my account is inactive and to reorder. Isnt that awesome they have my credit card info and there is a charge so far and they want me to reorder. Respond to me Mr. Borislow as I will have a laugh about this with the Illinois attorney General.
June 22nd, 2008 at 3:20 pm
I would definitely contest this charge with your credit card company!
June 27th, 2008 at 11:18 pm
I want to cancell….How do I do that?
June 28th, 2008 at 12:53 pm
If you are past the 30-day free trial, I think the only thing to do is to log into your Magic Jack account and make sure you are not on automatic billing so you are not charged again when your year is up.
To uninstall Magic Jack from your computer, here is a website that gives good instructions for that:
http://www.ooine.com/index.cfm/2008/3/15/How-to-uninstall-Magic-Jack
Hope this helps!

I’ve had mine for 2 days now and am pretty impressed. I’m in N.C. at my summer house, but I chose the area code at home in FL. Now, people can call me as if it’s a local call. I’ve been testing it by calling friends on cell and home phones, local and long distance. I’ve had slight static or stuttering on one or two calls, but most have been very clear. If you’re on a wireless network and using a cordless phone, try not to use a 2.4 GHz type. If it’s close to your wireless card, your network may lose connection momentarily. They interfere with wireless networks. Nothing to do with the MJ.
I like the way the voicemail feature sends you an email with the recording of your messages. You just click on them and your media player plays the message. Or you can call the usual way.
I’m not saying it’s perfect, but for $19.99 a year, long distance included, it’s not that bad. I’ll keep testing to see if any major problems arise. For now, I think it’s pretty cool!

I would like to talk to someone about the magic jack, on the phone. Thanks!
July 21st, 2008 at 7:06 am
I have a news flash to all the people that when I was Installing Magicjack I kept getting a icon down on the toolbar next to the clock. When I put the mouse pointer over the icon it said “Safe to Remove Hardware.” Question: What Hardware is being removed? Can someone tell me what I should do. PLEASE HELP!!!
July 22nd, 2008 at 5:23 pm
The magicjack icon I have just says “magicJack” when I run my mouse pointer over it. However, my icon is not right next to my clock on the taskbar. The icon that is right next to my clock does say “Safely Remove Hardware”, so it may be reading that when you put your mouse pointer next to the magicjack icon. Try moving your mouse pointer around and see if that helps your problem.

Here is the direct link to their customer care page:

February 5th, 2009 at 3:49 pm
Elizabeth,
Sounds like there may be something going on with your computer that is blocking you from reinstalling the magic jack. You may have to uninstall it completely first.

Elizabeth,
Here is a site that has instructions for uninstalling magic jack. I haven’t done this myself, so cannot vouch for the accuracy, so proceed at your own risk. If you decide to do this, make sure to back up your computer first.

My magicjack keeps saying I owe a balance even though I received it as a gift what do I do? Can I uninstall it and reinstall it?
March 27th, 2009 at 1:45 am
I’ve had magic jack for a year and it has been great. I use it only for outgoing calls and have had no problems. It has paid for itself many times over.My only concern now is that it may become so popular that it may not be able to handle the traffic.
May 7th, 2009 at 12:26 am
Hi,
I doubt that MJ will allow you to keep your phone number anytime soon without charging for it. If you want to cancel your land line but keep the phone number you had for years, you may want to consider http://ParkMyPhone.com. Park My Phone allows you to keep the phone number with voicemail or forward the calls to your Magicjack number. Check it out.
May 8th, 2009 at 5:45 pm
I cancelled the MJ same day when i found out i would have to dial long distance across town to call my hubby- Needless to say MJ has charged me 59.95 and when i tried to get a credit then NO ONE will help you – I believe they are nothing but a rip off .

I need help to install my Magic Jack, I can’t get it installed.
July 15th, 2009 at 11:10 pm
Worked perfectly when installed. How can anyone complain about a phone that costs $50 or less for an entire year of unlimited long distance calling–but looking above, some people do.
Goes to show that no good deed goes unpunished, I guess.
Meanwhile, I think it’s great. Finally, after 40 years of being pushed around by phone companies I get my revenge by getting cheap phone service NOT provided by them. I hope the phone companies all go broke.
July 17th, 2009 at 5:06 pm
I very happy with Magic Jack, my friends can’t call me because o are code, is there anyway this can be changed. Thanks
July 18th, 2009 at 6:06 pm
@thelma,
You can log in to your magicJack account at my.magicjack.com to change your phone number. You are allowed to change it once for free. But even if you change to area code to a local one for you it may still incur charges to your friends when they call. Why not have your friends get a magic jack also?
July 19th, 2009 at 12:17 pm
Is there a charge for international calls?
July 19th, 2009 at 12:18 pm
Can you use the same phone number> can you use more than one number, if you have a business and have 3 phone lines?
July 20th, 2009 at 3:12 pm
@Ghabi,
There is a charge for international calls, unless the person you are calling also has a magic jack and you call them on that number.
You can have more than one number if you purchase more than one magic jack from what I understand.
Thanks for visiting!

I have had MagicJack for about a year and it has actually been as close to perfect as I could hope, except that my TiVO does not dial trough a MagicJack line. Other than that, it has been wonderful. I have a normal cable modem and the clarity is good. What is even better is that they use AT&T international lines, so when I call Bottswana it is clear as a bell. I have also been able to cut my cell phone minutes paid for in less than half, saving hundreds a month. With that kind of savings, even if the MJ is just OK I am bound to love it. Remember, it competes directly with Vonage at $25/month, so to me there is absolutely no doubt who the winner is. The winner is those people who get good enough telecom through the MagicJack and still have enough in their wallet to take their loved ones out for dinner one more time a month every month.

i’ve had nothing but trouble with mine. i bought a new computer and a new maqic jack. still no luck. sound drops out all the time or can’t hear me. i think comcast is messing it up. then they can sell you their service. i hope i am wrong.

The Magicjack has problems……worked perfectly for 30 days, seemed like a bargin. Then, audio problems developed, could not comprehend incoming conversation. Have used mj website technical 17 times. All ‘fixes” are canned conversation from India. When agent gets tired, or runs out of ideas, they apologize, and inform you that they are “passing” you on to a higher authority. He or she will give you 5 or 10 minutes of “canned fixes, which of course, do not have any effect on your mj, then guess what…..you are disconnected. I have been disconnected 17 times. There is NO technical # for you to talk to a live person. There is NO ONE ALIVE at this company. Many people out there have a mj that appears to work as promised. Feel fortunate. I’m sure that a lot of research has gone into this product, HOWEVER, Attorneys General in all the U.S. should keep an eye on this operation, because it’s not quite ready for “prime time”.

I have had this on for only a day or so but I have it working on XP and Windows 7, when I first hooked it up it was cutting out, they coould hear you fine, but you could not hear them. A simple rebbot fixed that issue, but that was on Windows 7, XP installed in minutes and was up and running. For those of you who may be getting cut out, make sure that you dont have a bunch of things hammering your processor, I havent tested yet, but I can assume that if you have an older PC with slower prossecing, less, RAM, etc, etc, then somthing as trivial as running a web page with flash animation or virus scan software, could crumple the use of the device. Also if your internet speed is slow you have issues. Say you have 768k down there could be problems. But so far mine is running like a champ, was downloading somthing rocking at 500+k down and had crystal clear sound on the phone. Also saved $20 a month on the phone bill this morning.

I purchased my MJ a month ago and had no problem setting it up except for the firewall problem, but being a computer technician i found a work around easily and it works great!
Call quality is very good and I haven’t had one problem with it yet. My ISP’s bandwidth is more than enough to handle the MJ up here in Canada.
I hear some horror stories about people having problems. After researching many of the problems people are having I’ve come to the conclusion that it comes down to 2 factors. (1) Users or (2)users computers.
I run my MJ on a dedicated computer that sits in the corner that no one uses. I use XP home and it works great… Vista is a bit more problematic and windows 7 also has some issues with MJ.
In all for $19.95 a year I’m more than happy with MJ! One 10 minute long distance call and it’s paid for itself… Where else can you find that kind of service?
