magicJack Cell Phone
The magicJack voip phone is now taking on the cell phone companies. A magicJack cell phone is coming soon. A little later this year (2010), and barring any delays, there will be a new device you can buy to make free calls with your cellular phone. I’m thinking the release of this new product may be delayed by lawsuits as the cell phone companies have paid billions of dollars for their licenses and won’t be happy about another company saving minutes for their customers. According to the inventor of the magicJack, Dan Borislow, their licenses do not extend into your home, so perhaps not, if that is a clear-cut issue. With billions of dollars at stake, I’m sure we will hear some rumblings from the cell phone companies of the world.
The projected cost for this voip cell phone device is $40, the same as the original magicJack and will give you free calls for one year to the United States and Canada. It will be just a little larger than the device for voip phone calls and is like a very small cell tower for your home. It plugs into a usb port on your computer and requires a high speed internet connection to use. You basically have your cell phone within range of the mini-tower and then the tower will make a call to your cell phone. You then enter a code and after that, any calls made to or from your cell phone when you are in your home will be routed through the internet, thus saving you minutes on your cell phone plan. If you want to use your cell phone to call internationally, those minutes will not go on your cell phone bill, but rather you will purchase international minutes from magicJack, like you do now with your MJ voip phone.
The downside is that the magicJack cell phone won’t work with all cellular phone companies. To be able to use this device, your cell phone company needs to be using the GSM Standard. Here in the United States, that includes AT&T and T-Mobile, but not Verizon or Sprint. I probably won’t be trying this one out for myself, because I’m on Verizon and love the service enough not to change it. However, I do have a family member that is on AT&T, so I will buy one for her just to see how this new gadget works and if it is worth the cost. I’ll report back my findings as soon as this new cell phone service is available, complete with pics and installation instructions.
