MagicJack Problems
Occasionally people run into some MagicJack problems, especially when they first start using the device. This article will provide a brief outline of some of the most common problems as well as the simple solutions which one can try out in order to fix them. If these don’t work then you will have to either do further, more in depth research, or else consult your manual or the company themselves. Luckily, the device is overall a pretty simple thing to use and for the most part people don’t run into any major problems with it. Nevertheless, just in case they do, that is why this article has been prepared here for you today.
First of all, you should make sure your Windows Operating System (or OS) is working properly. Make sure you don’t have any bugs or viruses. You probably already have the appropriate software pre-installed in order to run certain scans to check this sort of thing out. Do that and then delete any problems that are on your hard drive. Also, one should make sure their memory is sufficient and is allocated in an appropriate manner to allow the proper functioning of the MagicJack platform. Many problems can be traced back to just simply memory issues within the computer. Unless your system is very old, those can often be fixed by some sort of an update or “cleaning”.
Another tip that I have heard people mention in order to get rid of pesky problems is to restart the computer once a week. This kind of cleans out the cobwebs that accumulate. If your computer is older you may even want to restart once (or even more frequently) per day. (This is what I have to do with mine.) Also, one should unplug and replug the device from the computer at least once a month. This works to reset everything and get a clean, level playing field.
Finally, use an A/C powered USB hub when you plug in the Magic Jack. You won’t have to pay more than $10 for this simple device so it is really worth it. It often helps to solve a lot of typical Magic Jack problems before they become totally out of control. A lot of this is pure and simple common sense, but people tend to get overwhelmed, especially when they are first using this voip phone service. Just remember that most problems are a lot easier to fix than they might seem at first. Take a deep breath and start trying out these solutions.

Problem: Recently purchased a MagicJack and never
had any problems of setting up or using. My problem is incoming local calls in my town are charged a long distance charge even if they are in the same block. The area codes that were offered were only 4 numbers.
I am returning the device because I think it was misleading not knowing this prior to purchase.

my magicjack DID work well for me – sort of still does but I always called my number then *1234 to check voicemail – always worked and as of today it doesn’t and I can’t find anything that helps and as for live support – it doesn’t work! How can i get it working if i have no way to contact them??? I checked lots of questions and none work – can’t do what it says to do! calling and dialing the *1234 doesn’t work so can’t set up another number … til now i liked it but tonight i am very frustrated! I can only get my number through on magic jack like one in twenty calls to another company or friend. What happens….once I dial the number there is no ring, yet Im told that the company or person Im calling can hear a ring, they pick it up but I have already disconnected because I dont hear a ringing dial tone. My Magicjack initializes fine, and if I use it right after it starts up, the calls work fine and quality is good. My problem is that after a few minutes of non – use, I get no dial tone and have to restart it from scratch. It seems to “time out”. This is a fairly recent problem, I suspect from a so called “upgrade”. I also found out from working with their tech support that if you use any longer USB extension than the one they give you, it doesn’t work. The light won’t stay on the little module but for a few seconds. Seems to me like the sensitivity is very poor. Is it recommended that you buy the powered USB extension ? MJ Tech support did not say anything about it.

when I call a number it comes across my computer, not my phone. I feel silly talking to my computer.
People tell my there is static and other noises.

I cannot get my MajicJack to work on my new computer. I have had magic Jack for about three years, and is has always worked for me.Even when traveling, but now it will not do anything when I plug it into my new computer which is a 64 bit operating system, as apposed to my old 32 bit operating system.There must be some remedy to this problem, as most of thew computers sold now are 64 bit.

Ever since i tried to get a new magic jack plus hooked up I can not call some Long Distance. I did not have fast enough service from Windstrean so I had to send it plus 4 of my kids phones back only one child could use it because the rest of us have windstream and it is too slow. What can I do to get my long distance numbers working, I have to miss this 2 week pay because the toll free numbers do not work and my pay must be in on time or wait 2 weeks. STOP publishing your phone numbers! Any & every crackpot on the internet is able to call you! (I’m constantly AMAZED at the number of ppl who find joy making other peoples’ lives miserable!)
I, too, am a MJ user who came in search of help… but this site obviously isn’t where to find it… but there are a few ppl who *I* can help.
#12 & others w/ receptivity probs, i.e. those who hear “every other word”: The inventor of MJ didn’t think far enuff ahead to realize a person may be USING his/her PC for somethg when a call comes in.
Shut down whatever apps you can, ESPECIALLY Windows Media Player (& other viewers, such as VLC, Quiktime, etc)or at least stop/pause them. If you’re watching a movie, especially ‘Streaming Video’, shut it down. The same goes for YouTube & *ESPECIALLY* stop any & all TORRENTS (Seeding &/or Downloads).
I learned, thru experimentation, if I stop “uTorrent” I RARELY have reception probs.(But you need to be sure you’ve STOPPED the torrents & shut DOWN the program. Merely closing it or even stopping/pausing a torrent will still allow a torrent to seed if you’re a “critical” seeder.
The way I learned what can stay running when I get a call from MJ was by shutting down ALL my apps & then enabling them, one-by-one. (Same as when try’g to isolate the source of a problematic update/program.)
As silly as it sounds, signing OFF of the internet may be all that’s needed.
#5 (John Lennon — glad you’re still alive. Wait’ll Yoko hears of it!) The “thingy” that pops up is programmed into the app. Search for “Turn MJ into a Service” & follow the instructions EXACTLY. It’ll run automatically in the background. The other “thingy” is the splash screen. Search: Magic Jack + splash screen + disable.
Now if anyone out there knows how/why my MJ suddenly began tellg me there’s no “new pictures or video images loaded on this device” after I ran WMP for the first time (I know wmp somehow “synced” w/ the MJ but can’t figure out how to UNsync it. Am totally cut off in the NM desert & now, for some reason my (Verizon) cell phone is telling me my phone is “in a coma.” (Did it have a brain injury/aneurism that burst w/o my knowing it?

#43, Carl in Kuwait: just plug it into a USB port & follow the prompts. When done, unless you have “disable autoruns” (like I do, w/ PandaCloud anti-vi), just reboot. If it doesn’t start automatically (you’ve autoruns disabled), either dbl click the icon on your desktop or enable autoruns. (You might want to make the services “Start” setting to “Delayed Start” so as not to interfere w/ other autorun programs on reboot–such as your security programs/Net svc.)

The person saying the “light” on the plug-in goes out after a few secs? Your device is faulty. Arrange for it to be replaced/exchanged.
