Is an A/C Powered USB Hub a Good Fix?
After having my Magic Jack about 6 weeks, I started having problems with it. First it wouldn’t stay connected, constantly starting up and then disappearing. I quit using it to make phone calls as I feared that the call would get cut off. Then my computer started freezing up. I tried everything else first, and then the light bulb went off – unplug the Magic Jack! Voila, no more compter problems, but what to do about my cheap phone calls? Research on the internet suggested getting an A/C powered USB hub to solve the problem. So, that’s what I did, went to eBay and found one for $6.98 that included free shipping and it arrived yesterday. Since I was too busy yesterday to mess with it, I opened it up this morning and plugged in the new USB A/C powered hub, and then plugged my magicJack device into it. Works great now, I made a long distance call to make sure it was working all the way. The softphone screen is also staying connected. I did try to fax with it, but my fax program is not recognizing the device as a modem. I didn’t bother trying to tweak things to make it work, as officially, sending faxes are not supported with the Magic Jack. That is not a big deal for me as I never need to send faxes.
As my Magic Jack was loading, it gave me a message that it was also being updated. There are a few tiny changes to the softphone screen and it had a new message, here is the pic of it below:
I clicked on the button that says “Try Us Now Click Here” and it took me to my magicjack account. From there you can pre-purchase minutes for international calling. It only offers buying $5 or $10 worth at a time. In looking at the call rates, it seems like most of the rates to Europe are 2 cents a minute, other places in the world cost more. But if there is someone that you call a lot, or would if the rates weren’t so high, buy that person a magicjack and send it to them. All they’ll need is a computer with a high-speed internet connection.
Even with the problems I was having now fixed, I still would not get rid of my landline phone. Saving money on long distance calls for now is sufficient for me.
So, if you’re having problems with your Magic Jack not working correctly, try buying an A/C powered USB hub and see if that solves your problem.

I cannot hear the person I am calling and the person cannot hear me either. Does a wireless router interfere with magic jack? Anyone else have this problem or have a fix? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I have used the MJ on a wireless laptop and wired desktop system. In both cases, I still get times when I can not hear the party on the other end. Also, sometimes I can not hear my voice message when checking missed calls. One day callers could not leave messages, so I tested calling my MJ phone number from an office landline. It took 5 times to get through. 2 times the voice mail hung-up on me, 2 times I could not hear the voice mail, and the last I was able to left a message. But, the test message I left was so faint when recorded, that I could hardly make out what was said. They blame your equipment, but I’m sure it’s their hardware and software on servers that have the real problems.

I had this same type of problem – they couldn’t hear me on the other end. Called MagicJack and there is an update to download as of 8/7/09. After downloading and installing into my computer, everythings works great! GL

I had problems of all sorts described above, and waded through the almost uselss MJ support issues until I found the ‘chat’ option. He resolved everything by having me click on a link he provided.
My only concern is that MJ is storing our calls, like Google does with everything it’s involved with (note EULA notices in everything you download!).

I tried an AC powered hub and it did not work. This is my solution For “Warning:You must plug magicJack into USB” error:
If every time your computer reboots, or you change MJ to other computers and you get the message “Warning: You must plug magicJack into USB” and then you get transferred to a stupid website showing a kid and 2 dogs named Magic and Jack and you are totally frustrated, then this solution may help a lot.
First: Why is this happening? “My MJ was working fine before the “Lucky You” upgrade and now it acts erratically.” Yes, I too, have spent many hours on the MJ chat box and got only temporary fixes. After reading many posts, I have come to the conclusion that MJ was compromised and people were using the service without paying for it. The MJ people made software changes at their end and forced firmware changes at the user end. But since there are many “hardware” variations out there, this caused many problems. The problems and solutions vary from one user to another. There is no “one solution – fits all” fix out there and they know it and won’t admit it. There are too many devices out there and it would be too costly for them to try to replace all of the devices. Besides, that would be admitting that they made a mistake and they sent the devices out prematurely without fully testing them (kinda like Windows 95, 98, 2000, XP, Vista, etc.).
OK, now for the fix that works great for me. This solution requires a little bit of old DOS knowledge. I am assuming that you have already downloaded the appropriate Upgrade.exe file from the MJ website and have installed the upgrade already.
• Plug in your MJ and let it error out.
• Close the stupid MJ website window
• Use My Computer or Windows Explorer and format the “Removable Disk” associated with MJ
• Use My Computer or Windows Explorer and go to the drive called “magicJack” and double-click on the “autorun.exe” file.
• MJ should now boot-up correctly BUT you will need to put in your user name and password AND you lose your address book every time.
After you have done the above solution once and if it solves your problems, then your ready for the next part that makes the procedure much easier, does not ask for a user/password, and keeps your address book.
The following are one-time procedures that need to be done in order to make the easy part work:
1. Fill in your magicJack Address Book (with at least 1 name/phone number).
2. Make a directory on your C drive called mj (C:\mj)
3. Copy 3 files from your magicJack “Removable Disk” drive in a subdirectory named “magicJack”, These files are labeled AddressBook.xml, CfgCache.dat, Profiles.db and copy them to your c:\mj drive that you just created.
4. IMPORTANT: Use Windows Explorer and uncheck the hidden property on each of these files or they will not copy with DOS commands..
5. Note the drive letters of the “magicJack” and “Removable Disk” drives
6. Create a batch file called “MJstart.bat” or any other name you prefer.
7. The batch file should contain the following DOS commands:
echo off
if exist g:\*.* goto fault
format g: /fs:fat
mkdir g:\magicJack
copy c:\mj\*.* g:\magicJack\*.*
f:\autorun.exe
goto end
:fault
cls
echo MagiJack not installed or not in correct drive location!!!!
echo Check for memory sticks and other USB devices connected!
echo Remove offending drive component and restart computer.
pause
:end
Note that “g” is my “Removable Disk” drive and “f” is my “magicJack” drive. IMPORTANT: You must replace these letters with your own drive letters that you found in Step #5 above and then save it on your Desktop.
***Now plug in the MJ box, wait for the start of the stupid MJ site, close the site, click on the batch file that you made and MJ will boot up properly with NO login and your address book will appear. Every time your computer reboots or you plug in the MJ box, this is all you need to do!***
Note: If you change your address book, you will need to recopy it over and un-hide it.
This method works great for me. I am using XP Pro but it probably will work with other Windows operating systems.
I hope this works for you as well as it does for me, but realize that the solutions are not the same for the same problem.

I hooked it up to an e machine comp it worked just fine in the front usb port but unable to do so in the back usb ports. this is where it got tricky after a week of excellent mj usage, windows on my computer became corrupted upon shutting the comp down on evening and rebooting in the morn i get the error, “autoprgchk not found, skipping auto chk.” then the comp shuts it’s self off and continues this cycle till i cut it off myself. I just want to know if anyone else exp this.

I have a problem my MJ phone my calls keep breaking up. What can I do?

I have had MJ for over a year and it works just as well as my cell phones, which drop calls, doesn’t work under certain conditions ( like non-service areas, some buildings etc. ) Am I ready to throw out my cell phones?..No. So, I don’t throw out MJ either. At $20 bucks a year, it beats my cell phone charge by a mile. Caller ID, forwarding, messaging…it’s great. Issues you have…..best look at your computer…..connections, IE server, when auto downloads, scanning ,etc are done; plus your internet carrier issues, like cable….lose TV connections once in a while?….did you throw your TV too??…..I have an 11 yr old HP desktop w/ MJ and it is great!! If I answer a call, no one answers…big deal…..I go to MJ on my screen, see who called and call them back…and have always been able to make the connection. Look, whatever issue you are having, simply reboot MJ by unplugging and replugging the jack. Done deal.

If you experience problems with the magicjack like computer shutting down or your system getting corrupted, it means that your computer’s power supply is underpowered and unable to supply enough juice for the 5Volts required by all those gear plugged in to your USB ports. I had these problems before and they only went away after I replaced my power supply with a 600 watt unit.

I love the Majic Jack, its the best 20.00 money can buy.
I only found one issue, when inputting a phone number it keeps asking for an area code. I see many have had that same issue. This apears to be a software issue with MJ, when keying in a number it tries to start dialing instead of waiting for you to hit the send key. This problem does not exist when dialing from the contacts list. This is an oops for MJ.
I am ordering a Net Talk unit (100.00 one time fee)and am sending MJ back. I want the unit to work without the PC being on, so I will try NetTalk 6100. I have no gripes with MJ except for needing a computer turned on. If you travel and use free WYFI signals with your laptop than MJ excells. (I dont). I like the fact that Net Talk has a seperate power adaptor, not dependant on the PC’s power supply or USB Ports.
Then there is OOMA for about 200.00 one time fee.. Perhaps a good unit for a small business.
The problems with using a PC are many, Old PC’s, limited power capabilities, Slow processors.
My PC is new, and again I have no issues but I think my best choice will be Net Talk

if you are going to use third party USB cables, makes sure that they have the RU or UL mark for best performance.-,-
