What Is Magic Jack?

 


Magic Jack is a revolutionary newcomer to VOIP (voice over internet protocol) technology.  Popularity has grown for internet voice telephone calls in the past few years as the cost is significantly cheaper than the traditional phone companies. Magic Jack is already blowing the other voip companies such as Vonage and Skype out of the water with their cheap flat-rate $19.95/year for unlimited local and long distance calling.  Magic Jack customers don’t have to be technological geniuses to use this simple device.  Simply plug the Magic Jack USB device into a USB port on your computer. Set up only takes a couple of minutes and you’re on your way to free calling.  Any regular land-line type phone can be used to make calls. You may also use a headset,  or even your computer’s built-in microphone and speakers.

With Magic Jack, you can make a phone call to any phone in the United States or Canada:  landline phones, cell phones, computer phones. You will be able to receive calls from any of these phones also. You pay one license fee per year (currently at $19.95) and this enables you to call all you want.  If you want to talk to Aunt Mary for 3 days on the telephone, go right ahead…there are no limitations to the length or frequency of calls.

The requirements for being able to use a Magic Jack are: 

  • Having a high-speed internet connection such as broadband, cable internet, DSL, wireless, Wi-Fi, WiMax or FIOS.  Magic Jack is not recommended for use with satellite internet.
  • Microsoft Windows XP or Vista, Apple/Mac with Intel.

Your computer does have to be on for you to make or receive calls with Magic Jack.  If your computer is off and someone tries to call you, that call will be forwarded to your voice mail so that person can leave a message for you.

    To use Magic Jack from India, you need to get someone you know in the United States to order it and then mail it to you. Then you could call anywhere in the US or Canada for free, but not to other countries.

    I installed Magic jack last night and was told an e-mail would be sent and that I had 24 hours to respond. I have not received an e-mail yet. I can make calls but my phone doesn’t ring, can somebody help me?

    I have the ability to assign QoS services on protocols on my 3Com router and have assigned VoIP to high priority, but it seems as if the Magic Jack doesn’t use the normal VoIP protocol, so my router doesn’t see those packets to prioritize them. Any idea what protocol, ports, etc. the Magic Jack uses?

    The best way to purchase the magic jack device is going to best buy. If you like it you keep it, if you don’t. I’m a phone technician installing Voip’s. To any one out there reading my comment. Your phone quality depends on how good your internet connection is. Your voice is packets of information passing thru the web. If your signal from broadband is low, you could hear robotic sounds. Or other issues like being connected and disconnected. Now the magic jack is connected to the pc, so your harddrive and RAM better be in good shape. Hope this helps anyone outthere.     Try using other phones to see if you have the same problem and if so then get an a/c powered usb to plug the magic jack into.

    I am planning to purchase magic jack in the US and take it to India for use by my parents. Do you know if I have to activate it in the US before taking it to India? Also, does the instrument work ONLY with Windows XP or Vista (and no patch or add-on for an earlier version?)

    I just purchased a MagicJack and am anxious to set it up – properly – the first time.

    The additional features I am interested in are voice mail AND having one of MagicJack’s local numbers to dial in on.

    In all that I read on the web I found nothing about how to get these two features installed. And it would seem to me that getting the telephone number would require specific information.

    Will someone please tell me how to get voice mail and a local number upon initial set up. I’d not like to press the wrong thing while setting up my MagicJack and remove all chances of ever having them.

    I wanted a telephone number for a business and made a mistake to pick up a MagicJack.
    All is good until the support or billing or customer service is needed.
    Because they do not have any intelligent support behind that company and that they do not care at all about the

    client (you).
    First of all, they do not have a number that you can call.
    Only a “Chat” room with you know whom…
    One hour later they are starting to understand the problem after transferring me to a Top 10% (I guess it is a chat

    supervisor ) but will not be able to fix my problem even 2 hours later.
    If your MagicJack does brake (as they do, as they overheat) they may send you another one for it. That is if you

    really, really, insist heavily.
    The bad news is that the new MagicJack will be another number! The other bad news is that if you did pay for 5

    years already you then will loose all the years you did not used, as the MagicJack License is not transferable from

    One Number to another. Same for the money you had prepay on this account.
    Anyway, I had 3 of them, and the tech support will still not recognize that I still should had the right to get my

    PAID contract back for me to use on any of my telephone #.
    So bottom line: You get what you pay for! Look at Verizon package phone service, or Vonage, or Skype, or

    whistlephone, or ooma.com, or freephoneline.ca,or NetTalk.com but MagicJack is not recommended for quality communication (people

    cannot hear you well or your voice will be cut off and only few words will be understood) stuttering echo,

    crackling, static not a clean clear connection even if you run the new downloaded version. MagicJack is not

    recommended for Business as you cannot have more then 1 line.
    I now use a professional Polycom voice overIP on the same internet line with no problem.
    Sad experiences after almost 2 years using MagicJack…
    I gonna use my MagicJack for Clay Pigeon shooting practice!
    I do not have the heart to sale them online for you to buy and have a bad experience like me.

    Hi, I’m probably the last one Who wants to purchase MJ. I’m a believer now since people swear by it. However, if I am in the Philippines using the MJ and call someone in the USA on their landline, would the person in the USA be charged while I in Manila who is using the MJ is free of charge since there’s already $20 in my MJ?
